"Monks, eleven advantages are to be expected from the release (deliverance) of heart by familiarizing oneself with thoughts of loving-kindness (metta), by the cultivation of loving-kindness, by constantly increasing these thoughts, by regarding loving-kindness as a vehicle (of expression), and also as something to be treasured, by living in conformity with these thoughts, by putting these ideas into practice, and by establishing them. What are the eleven?

1. "He sleeps in comfort. 2. He awakes in comfort. 3. He sees no evil dreams. 4. He is dear to human beings. 5. He is dear to non-human beings. 6. Devas (gods) protect him. 7. Fire, poison, and sword cannot touch him. 8. His mind can concentrate quickly. 9. His countenance is serene. 10. He dies without being confused in mind. 11. If he fails to attain arahantship (the highest sanctity) here and now, he will be reborn in the brahma-world.

"These eleven advantages, monks, are to be expected from the release of heart by familiarizing oneself with thoughts of loving-kindness, by cultivation of loving-kindness, by constantly increasing these thoughts, by regarding loving-kindness as a vehicle (of expression), and also as something to be treasured, by living in conformity with these thoughts, by putting these ideas into practice and by establishing them."

So said the Blessed One. Those monks rejoiced at the words of the Blessed One.

There is a term used by engineers when discussing the ability for a bridge to hold and withstand force. It's known as "structural integrity". The entire design of a bridge, road, overpass, etc is carefully considered with every square centimeter so that the path will hold strong for many years to come. When structural engineers are designing their blueprints, they keep in mind their research from past designs so as to study "structural fatigue". The integrity and fatigue are the 2 main factors in the design process.

When the construction process is taking place, a sign is placed in front of the path informing would-be crossers of the load that which this bridge has been measured to be able to withstand. Beyond that point, and it could give way and fail.

This is exactly how The Buddha approached the process of his learning, the process of his cultivating his mind and the process of his sharing his newfound information with his followers. It is all a process and takes time. Careful measures weren't taken at first.

But this is what we call: stages of progression. And it is absolutely vital to keep this in mind when venturing on your journey.

The Buddha knew there was a great task at hand. He wanted to find the answers to the universe. He tried several different methods such as intense asceticism. And it nearly cost him his life. But no matter what, he knew there were 2 distinct states he had to always overcome...

1) Abdication
2) Languidness

Abdication is to surrender and give up. And languidness is to be lethargic, lazy and have apathy towards your goals. The Buddha knew that giving up wasn't an option. And to reach his goals, he could never be heedless either.

But like any human when approaching a goal, it is imperative we remind ourselves that our current state is not our permanent one. For The Buddha, too, this was a huge breakthrough. He discovered one of the 3 pillars of the universe this way. The pillar of change - no 2 moments are the same, never will be and cannot be replicated, replaced or recovered.

So he learned that in order to move forward, we have to learn how to let go and allow the natural process of development take place. In doing so, we no longer cling to that which is transient. And then we can reside within a place of peace.

But, just like the structural engineers know about their bridge, our path will surely have a specific amount of weight in can withstand. If we try to place more weight than our path can hold, our minds can feel as if we are overwhelmed and a sense of alacrity feels gone.

The Buddha was the greatest of mental engineers. He saw structural failure in his bridge to reaching enlightenment. And so, he went back to the drawing board. He reshaped his designs and continually put forth more effort into his path. He never gave into temptations. But in the end, he discovered one necessary item to his bridge...balance. He discovered that extremes will not build bridges. So, too, with you in your life must you find balance.

Take one step at a time. Be patient with your designs, your failures and your efforts. There are always 2 parts to every wave. And they will always have a crest and a trough. So respect both your successes and your obstacles. Allow them to be your stimulant and guides. And then...continue on your path of peace, kindness and diligence.

Always with love and truth,

- Saññamo 😊❤

"With the complete transcending of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, he enters & remains in the cessation of perception & feeling. And, having seen [that] with discernment, his fermentations are completely ended. This is called a monk who, coming to the end of the cosmos, remains at the end of the cosmos, having crossed over attachment in the cosmos."

- The Buddha, Anguttara Nikaya

It is incredibly heart breaking for us to announce that our extremely good friend, Mr Ong Phan Dinh Chinh, has just passed away this weekend of natural causes. He was one of the nicest individuals you could ever meet. Funeral services will be held Thursday and Friday. We will make effort to go live here on facebook so those who cannot attend will be able to be present in spirit. We ask that you take just 1 moment to think of him today. He was truly the kindest elder we've ever known.

Hug your loved ones as often as you can. There is no guarantee you'll ever get to do it again. 😔❤

“BEAUTY IS PAIN”

The real cost of beauty isn’t paid for by humans, but the animals who have the ingredients of makeup tested on them, commonly under cruel doses and circumstances! Rabbits, mice, cats, monkeys and many other animals are subjected to cruel experiments where the “quality” of certain makeup ingredients is injected and applied to their bodies in heavy amounts, usually resulting in blindness, extreme skin lacerations, and even death. If the “test subjects” don’t die in the experiment, they are killed promptly after. It is estimated that 200,000 animals are used for cosmetic testing every year!

It’s easy to ignore the victims of animal testing because it is hidden behind closed doors, where the end product is promoted by the alluring hook of “beauty.” The easiest way to sell a lie is to disguise behind desire- who doesn’t want to be more attractive?- but if you’re like me- the ugliest thing in the world is cruelty towards the innocent!

Every time you buy a cosmetic product that tests on animals, you are paying for the suffering of hundred of thousands of innocent animals! If you’re tired of endorsing torture, watch out for these big brands who still participate in animal testing:

1. NARS
2. L’Oreal
3. Estée Lauder
4. MAC
5. Benefit
6. Lancôme
7. Make Up For Ever
8. Maybelline
9. Rimmel London
10. Revlon
11. Mary Kay
12. Giorgio Armani

And many others!

Animal testing for cosmetics/ makeups is archaic, outdated, and insanely cruel! With so many vegan cruelty free alternatives there is no reason to give money to these inhumane money grubbing corporations. When you look in the mirror, ask yourself- what animal had to be disfigured for you to look “better?”

So join The Bison Movement and represent true beauty!- one that is cruelty free!
