The Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing connects communities to research, training, and programs that promote the wellbeing and resilience of children & families
The Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing (TXICFW) is located within the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. Utilizing our experiences in both direct social work practice and social welfare policy, our researchers seek to build evidence for social work practitioners and policy makers to improve practices and systems.

NASW-TX Continues to Oppose any Efforts to Redefine Child Abuse to Include Gender Affirming Care!
NASW-TX stands opposed to any efforts to change the definition of child abuse to include “gender affirming care”. These continued attempts to change the definition of child abuse are in direct opposition to social work values, principles, and our Code of Ethics and pose danger to transgender youth and their families.
NASW-TX reminds licensed social workers that this a non-binding legal opinion and they still have professional discretion on mandatory reporting. No rules on reporting were changed through this opinion, nor through the Governor's letter. Here us our full statement: bit.ly/3v8ciwB

The Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing (TXICFW) was originally a continuation/evolution of the Protective Services Training Institute (PSTI). Under the leadership of Dr. Jim Schwab, PSTI contracted with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to train Child Protective Services workers. For over ten years, PSTI trained thousands of caseworkers across the State of Texas. While the focus on training was successful, there was a general desire to expand the institute’s impact to include research activities related to child welfare services and family issues in general. Thus, The Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) was created in 2010 to encompass both training and research related to child and family issues, with a strong emphasis on child welfare issues. In 2016, CFRI changed it’s name to Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing (TXICFW) to encompass the expanded scope of our work, factoring in our new programs, professional development opportunities such as our trainings and Child Welfare conference and our renewed sense to unite academia and research with practitioners and advocates who work directly with children and families.
