It was conceived as a special year-end treat for our readers: devote an issue to the people who stood up and stood out in 2019. We wanted to focus on the people making Australia better or making us feel better or those who have simply pulled off something remarkable. Good Weekend Editor Katrina Strickland explains how we arrived at our inaugural list of nation’s most compelling movers and shakers.

Who Mattered 2019 will be live on theage.com.au tomorrow. You’ll also be able to find it in our Instagram story.

Are you tired of all the hatred & divisiveness that we see in America? I sure am! I wrote this blog "Do Democrats Hate America" for Psychology Today over a year ago, and I STILL get mostly ranting, hateful emails about it. I just received one that is so full of venom and vulgarities, I can't even copy & paste any of it. The person probably didn't even read my blog. It makes me sad. As Jesus said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." He encouraged us to not only love our neighbors, but to love our enemies as well. As Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh said, we must be peace to make peace. . We must aspire to the better angels of our nature. Spread love and kindness - we have too much hate in this world already. changehttps://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/tech-happy-life/202007/do-democrats-hate-america

Is Instagram as bad for teens as we have always feared? Since Frances Haugen, the #Facebook whistleblower, released internal documents, more people than ever believe that social media, like #Instagram, is harmful to teens. But reality is rarely as bad as our worst fears or headlines would have us believe. Read on to learn why these released documents aren't the "smoking gun" that prove our worst fears are true.

As far as each of us knows, we only have this one life to live. What are we supposed to do with it? What is the purpose of our existence? While I can't claim to know THE answer, I do have some thoughts about this topic that you might find helpful.

Being a teacher is such a difficult job as it is, but it has been exponentially more challenging since COVID hit & our political divisions have grown worse. Be patient and kind - schools, teachers, and staff are navigating an incredibly complicated "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. We can't become enemies of one another or we will pay a steep price.

An Introduction to The Reasonably Good Life

Sometimes it seems that we are living in a very, very mad world. Perhaps you are fed up with it as much as I am. Although life can be pretty awesome, we know there's room for improvement - if we can get out of our own way. I've been inspired by some of the madness I've seen (and, ahem, sometimes been a part of) to pursue The Reasonably Good Life. This is the first installment of my new YouTube series with the podcast coming shortly. I hope you join me on this journey to use our powers of reason to pursue the good life in this complicated world. Cheers!

Trust of others affects our well-being quite a bit, which is why the increased levels of polarization in the U.S. (and around the world) are toxic. As trust diminishes, so will our happiness. From the 2021 World Happiness Report: "Trust and the ability to count on others are major supports to life evaluations, especially in the face of crises. To feel that your lost wallet would be returned if found by a police officer, by a neighbour, or a stranger, is estimated to be more important for happiness than income, unemployment, and major health risks."

With the many ills in this world, especially in our politics, I strive to have some faith that things will improve (and I must do my part in that!). When I don't have faith, I can hope. When I don't have hope, I can dream.

A really nice summary of how we are getting sucked into this misinformation age. Note that these forces can affect both the right & the left equally bc it is a human problem and not a right or left problem per se. However, the group feeling most threatened might be more prone to believing and spreading misinformation as a way of enhancing group cohesion. ‘Belonging Is Stronger Than Facts’: The Age of Misinformation https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/07/world/asia/misinformation-disinformation-fake-news.html?smid=tw-share

I've had a lot of parents asking me about how to get their kids off of screens as the pandemic recedes, so I wrote this blog for Psychology Today. With three boys (ages 17, 14, and 9), my wife and I are in the thick of it too! We all need to take a deep breath though - we've been through the ringer, but there is hope! We are on the road back to normalcy!

A runner's high makes even more sense to me now! I get this high big-time between miles 3-10. It appears to be more related to endocannabinoids (our internal cannabis, if you will) than endorphins.

My mother always taught me that when life gives us a lemon, we should try to make lemonade. This can't be done with every bad event, of course. But for those of us who were without water and/or power in the great Texas Blizzard of 2021, as they are restored, we should be more appreciative than ever that we have them in the first place. For me, having a hot shower after 5 days without running water was a slice of heaven. I shall have a greater attitude of gratitude toward these common luxuries that I tend to take for granted. Plus, despite the hardships, it was fun to have the chance to play in the snow in Austin!
