Personally, I find that my daily skin care routine provides an incredible opportunity to ground, center, and care for myself. Unless I’m in a big rush, it also acts as a zen-like activity, bringing me peace and calm at the start of my day.

And it turns out, I’m not the only one who feels better and more grounded via skin care. Per Marie Claire Magazine, a recent study found that “15 percent of women say they use skin care to relax.”

The author goes on to say, “Going through my ritual at the beginning and the end of each day is an uplifting meditation that gives me a feeling of purpose, satisfaction, and optimism. I’m doing something proactive, and I can literally see the glowing results.”

I couldn’t agree more, and frankly, in today’s COVID-19 climate, I’ll take any bit of calm, satisfaction, and normalcy I can get right now.

So, as a means of helping you ground into a healthy routine and keep your skin care optimized and on-point, I’m happy to announce that Veritas Bioactives is in stock and available for at-home delivery.

And, now through April 15th, we’re offering a 15% discount off your next purchase.

Simple as that!

Devon here... Rather than inundate you with more virus info, I'd like to offer something that will hopefully give you a little ease and peace of mind – It's a simple practice I’ve been employing to keep myself centered, focused, and grounded each day...

That practice?

*** Routine ***

Studies have proven that having a consistent routine can be an anchor. No matter what’s going on in your day, routines – be they morning practices, evening rituals, or both – can be a real comfort.

The certainty of a routine can help us to manage the uncertainty that life often throws our way. Coping with unpredictable periods of time can feel more doable when we have a little structure in place.

“Unpredictable” is a fairly understated way to describe the state of the world right now. So, if I may, I’d like to offer you some brief tips on what you can be doing to create some positive anchors in your life via routine...

✅ Go to Bed and Wake Up At The Same Time Every Day

While it’s true that many high achievers rise early in order to prepare for the day, the more important point is creating a consistent daily rise/rest window for yourself. I like to wake up at 6:00am every morning, and I’ll go to bed between 10 and 11pm. This gives me a little flex time in the evenings while providing a steady schedule pulse to my day-to-day.

✅ Make Your Bed

I thought this one was a little mundane when I first read about it, but it’s actually a powerhouse. Per the advice of Navy Seal Admiral William H. McCraven: “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another.”

✅ Recite Affirmations

Although it might sound a bit “New-Age-y,” affirmations are proven methods of self-improvement. Per clinical psychologist Dr. Carmen Harra says. "They raise the level of feel-good hormones and push our brains to form new clusters of 'positive thought' neurons."

I love using affirmations to reframe how I think about myself and the day to come. In fact, I believe affirmations to be a key component in helping me stay positive and deflect negative self-talk.

Some simple affirmations that you could use are:

👉 I will do great things today
👉 I am positive, healthy, and strong
👉 I am accomplishing great things in my life, and I am proud of me
👉 I love myself, I love who I am, and I love who I am becoming

The goal here is to affirm and visualize the things you want to happen (but say them in the present tense.) As you focus on these things, you begin to believe that you can and will achieve them..

✅ Stick to A Personal/Beauty Care Regimen

Which of these techniques will help you achieve glowing skin?

✨ Hanging your head upside down for three minutes a day

✨ Using toner before serum or moisturizer

✨ Adding vitamin C to your routine

✨ Running ice cubes over your face until they melt

All of them!

The food that you eat has a HUGE effect on the quality of your skin.

When you think about it, it makes sense: what you eat is used to make new cells in the body.

If you’re eating not-so-great things, your body won’t be able to make the best new cells.

Especially when it comes to acne, it’s good to pay special attention to your food. The things you eat not only help make new cells, they also affect the bacteria in & on your body.

And bad bacteria = acne.

The types of foods that you should be including in a healthier, anti-acne diet are high in:

✨ Zinc
✨ Vitamins A + E
✨ Antioxidants
✨ Omega 3s

Some of our favorite foods for healthier skin include blueberries, pumpkin seeds, salmon, lentils, quinoa, and cashews.

How have you noticed a difference in your skin since prioritizing what you eat?

Do you know what peptides are? Why are they always listed on skincare products?

Simply put: “peptides” is the shorthand name for collagen peptides.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It’s used to help repair skin cells so that they remain healthy & youthful-looking for a longer period of time.

Peptides are basically the building blocks of the larger, full collagen molecules.

So, when you use topical products with peptides in them, you’re applying the pieces needed to reverse fine lines and other skin damage.

Find out more about why you should use products that include peptides here:

Oily skin. None of us love dealing with it, but it’s a common issue!

So what are some of the best ways to deal with it?

A few of our favorites include:

✨ Making sure to wash & apply toner regularly
✨ Always PAT the face dry - don’t wipe it
✨ Keep blotting papers on-hand
✨ Consider using a facial mask a few times per week

By adding these simple pieces to your skincare routine, you can help close those pores and reduce the amount of oil you see on your skin.

And with less oil, you’re less likely to experience pimples!

It’s a double-win, so give these methods a try to see for yourself.

Happy MLK Day, everyone.

7 Tips to Avoiding Chapped Lips 💋 | Veritas Backstage: Beauty & Wellness Institute

Having chapped lips is the pits!

And winter weather does little to help the matter. As the air gets drier, the delicate skin around your mouth can easily become compromised, leading to cracking, bleeding, and inflammation.

So if you’re suffering from dry, and/or painfully flaky chapped lips, you may be interested to check out our recent blog (see link) that outlines our favorite natural ways to keep your lips healthy and hydrated all season long.

7 Tips to Avoiding Chapped Lips:

Here’s to a healthy and happy pout this winter. If you’re suffering from dry, painfully flaky chapped lips, check out our favorite, natural ways to keep your lips healthy and hydrated all year long.

This time of year should be joyful, but clearly that’s not always the case.

Instead of joy and connection and yuletide cheer, more often than not we’re in a constant state of wanting to rip our hair out.

According to a survey by Healthline, 62% of people said their stress level increases during the holiday season.

But what about the other 38% of non-stressed folks? What are they doing different?

While I’ll never claim to have all the answers, what I do know is that last year’s holiday season was the most manageable, and most joyful one that I’ve had in years.

All I had to do was make a few small adjustments that equated to big results.

In my recent blog post, I outline 5 of my favorite strategies for avoiding holiday stress.

Check it out here:

If you have super sensitive skin and are looking for an alternative to microderm abrasion for exfoliation, look into using muslin cloths.

What? You've never heard of a muslin cloth? Allow us to make the introduction...

Muslin cloths are soft, lightweight pieces of woven cotton fabric and offer users an easy way to exfoliate skin using none other than—drumroll please—your hands.

Unlike cleansing brushes, muslin cloths offer a gentle approach to exfoliating, and have been used for centuries to help keep the skin looking fresh and rejuvenated.

An age old remedy for reducing eye puffiness is soaking a couple of tea bags in warm water.

Simple process is as follows:

Soak two caffeinated tea bags in warm water for a few minutes.

Then, chill the bags in the refrigerator for another few minutes.

Once chilled, wring each tea bag out and place one under each eye for 5 minutes.

Your eyes should be noticeably less puffy afterwards.

Fans of aromatherapy, rejoice! There are several essential oils that can help reduce puffy eyes and dark circles.

✅ Rose Geranium– This oil relieves water retention, which reduces the appearance of puffiness and dark under eye circles. Try dropping a few drops of rose geranium in some chilled aloe gel for an invigorating boost to your skin.

✅ Fennel and Witch Hazel– Try combining these two oils for an effective remedy that combats and smooths wrinkles, including bags under the eyes. This combination further tones and tightens skin which combats sagging under the eyes and reduces puffiness.

✅ Cypress– The constricting properties in this oil reduces blood vessels that are swollen, tightens skin, and eliminates fluid retention.

✅ Lavender– This soothing oil diminishes the appearance of under-eye bags. When applied to the skin, the diuretic components of lavender drain excess fluid from the under eye area, giving the skin a brighter more youthful look.

Consuming an excess amount of salt causes your body to retain fluid. This retention causes skin to appear puffy and can lead to bloating and weight gain.

On top of that, eating too much sodium increases your chance to develop high blood pressure, kidney stones, and chronic headaches.

It can be hard to limit sodium intake as you may not be aware of just how much sodium is added to food, especially processed food products and restaurant food. Check labels and nutrition facts whenever possible.

On average, the American Heart Association suggests that we consume ~ 1,500 mg of sodium per day for optimal health.

We know this is going to be a hard sell, but...

It’s worth noting that consuming both alcohol and caffeine will dehydrate your skin, which can exacerbate a number of skin conditions including the appearance of dark under eye circles and puffiness.

Avoiding alcohol and caffeine 100% is best for your skin and beauty; however, just limiting your intake will help.

One of the easiest things you can do for your overall health, beauty, and wellness is simply get enough sleep.

Sleeping- for 8 hours a night at minimum– will drastically reduce puffiness, redness, and dark circles around the eye area.

Additionally, some sleep experts claim that sleeping with your head elevated with one or two extra pillows will prevent fluid from building up in lower eyelids. This fluid is what causes dark under eye circles and puffiness.

As we learned in The Matrix, "There is no spoon..." But if you've got puffy eyes, perhaps there should be :)

For a quick puffy eye fix, try this easy home remedy- all you need is two metal teaspoons. Regular spoons will also work.

Take the spoons and hold them under cold running water for a couple minutes. Once the spoons are cold, hold them under your eyes for 1 minute- or 30 seconds if the cold is too much to take. The shock of the cold should revitalize tired eyes, relieving them of puffiness and dark circles.

It might sound a little strange to advocate using a teething ring for an adult, but the truth is that teething rings can be a great treatment for red puffy eyes!

Place a gel-filled baby teething ring (or two) in the freezer for 10-15 minutes, or until ice cold. Lie down and place the ring(s) over your eyes for about 10 minutes to reduce puffiness and potentially event boost your energy.

You’ve seen this remedy before in tv and movies- ladies in spas with cucumber slices over their eyes.

Perhaps you’ve even been one of these ladies in real life. The fact is that it works and you can do it in the comfort of your own home!

Take a cold cucumber and cut into ~1/4 inch thick slices. Put a slice over each eye and lay back for about 30 minutes. Afterwards, you will notice that your eyes are free of redness, less puffy, and brighter.

Fun fact: No cucumbers? A potato will also do the trick. Chill in the fridge until cold, slice, and place under your eyes for 10-15 minutes.

At Veritas Bioactives, we believe in the transformative power of looking your best. But what good is beauty if it comes at the cost of your wellbeing?

We create skincare formulations that are effective AND safe.

This is achieved via the elimination of anything that’s harmful to your health. In fact, we posit that the ingredients NOT included in a skincare formulation are just as important as the ingredients that are.

Do organizations like the FDA protect us consumers against ingredients that are bad for us?

Unfortunately, no.

There is almost zero federal regulation of the cosmetics industry in the United States. Almost zero! That’s a terrifying statistic.

A skincare product can go straight from a manufacturers lab to the shelves of your favorite store without any type of approval or mandatory safety testing.

The FDA only steps in to regulate in cases of misbranding or false advertising on packages. They do not – repeat DO NOT – regulate what actually goes inside the products.

By contrast, there’s a list of over 1,300 chemicals banned for use in cosmetics in the European Union due to questions over their safety. Here in the U.S., as of this writing the list of banned ingredients totals 11.

This is why it's so important to learn how to identify bad ingredients on product labels and to vigilantly make sure you are using quality products that consider your health AND your beauty! 09/11/2019

Did you know?

According to the Environmental Working Group, every day the average woman uses 12 products that contain roughly 168 unique ingredients.

And, a shockingly high percentage of those ingredients fall under the endocrine disrupter label, a category of constituents that affect hormonal balance and fertility.

Veritas Bioactives was born in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

On April 3, 2008, due to a rare condition known as twin to twin transfusion syndrome, founder Devon Perry’s son was born at just 27 weeks and weighed a paltry 2.5 pounds. (His twin’s heart had stopped beating 4 days prior)

Confined to an incubator, connected to a respirator and feeding tube, and challenged by a stage 3 brain hemorrhage, the odds of survival were anything but stacked in the child’s favor.

But 11 weeks after he was ushered into the world, Devon crossed the threshold of the hospital exit with her son in her arms, alive and well.

Devon credits a number of factors in her son’s dramatic turnaround:
