“None of our ideas are new. It’s the flourish, the personal mark of you and the client, that changes. Since nothing is new and everything was inspired by something else, the true expertise of a designer comes into play by learning where our ideas come from...”

A moody 4th of July red, white, and blue room. I love this classic color combination. This particular 4th of July is fraught for many, but I just visited Philadelphia and toured Independence Hall and was moved by the experience. I am a massive fan of Benjamin Franklin, and being in the same room he occupied when he signed the Declaration of Independence had me almost in tears! And a side note: if you have not seen the 1972 movie musical “1776,” run out and do so! It’s a joy to watch and has me feeling hopeful.

“Madras and the preppy aesthetic are forever linked. However, this textile wasn’t dreamed up by a Manhattan designer taking a break at the country club one summer afternoon. Far from it! Madras comes from humble beginnings, and its inherent weakness almost got it pulled from American shelves. That is, until it found strength in embracing its uniqueness…”

The exterior at our Schulle project in the late afternoon light calls attention to the texture of the cedar shakes. Love the new front doors!

Grackles are my favorite birds! We celebrated them by adding them to every entry gate at our previous studio on East 52nd Street. They are a symbol of bravery, adaptability, and resiliency, and they are bold and assertive, just like us!

At our Cape Cod project last summer, we had a ball playing with color through the landscaping, pillow fabrics, and throws. It’s refreshing to work in a beautiful northern climate in the summer!

“The ugly truth behind trends (and why I abhor them) is that the cycle ends on purpose so the next sale can be made. Once everyone has it, no one wants it anymore, leading you to the next desire, renovation, and purchase. If you want to stay in the good graces of good taste, you’re forced to run the never-ending hamster wheel of trends…”

We’re so excited to introduce you to our new Highland Design Atelier. This past October, we officially outgrew the 52nd Street studio that we purchased in 2021. Our new, larger, more versatile workshop space is an ever-changing canvas for our creative work, and we’re loving every second of it.

I sometimes miss our 52nd Street bungalow. It was so homey and full of character (and characters!). It was our home for four years, but we were bursting at the seams. I’m excited to debut our new Workshop space in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
