Memorial Day is almost here, and that means summer is right around the corner! It’s been a tough school year for just about everyone—and families need a break. While parents and caregivers may feel the need to purchase workbooks, apps, and other “educational” programs for their kids to work on over summer, remember that everyday activities generally provide the best learning opportunities. For parents of children with autism, you might be interested in this email we received today:

My name is Kelly Hargraves and I graduated from Texas State University and now I am a special education teacher in Frisco Texas. I have been working with a professor at Texas State for the past 10 years and we put on a summer camp for children with autism. Usually we hold camp at one of the local elementary schools in San Marcos Texas, but this year due to COVID we are holding it virtual. We have about 25 students signed up from all over Texas including other states such as California and Florida. This year we also have about 5 students from Brazil that will be joining. This year, my director and I decided not to charge anyone. We are accepting everyone that applies and its completely free. We have fun activities Monday through Friday from 9 to 12 through zoom. Our activities include: PE type activities, Coding with Microsoft, Virtual field trips to the Smithsonian museums, and music therapy by music therapist. We would love to have KXAN be apart of this awesome and fabulous opportunity and to share it across Austin in hopes to get more students involved. I look forward to speaking to someone about possibly doing a news report on this fabulous camp for children on the autism spectrum. My email is [email protected]

We have been busy today introducing our clients to telepractice sessions. Here we are working on following 3 step sequential directions while making an ice cream sunday. "It's just like a video game" as my kiddo expressed today! Life lessons such as computer navigation, problem solving errors, and that we are always learning, even adults, are priceless.

Why is it important to wash your hands? 🖐🖐🧼 This is a great visual to show kids why it’s so important to wash our hands regularly to keep germs from spreading 🦠 and to prevent getting sick. ⁣

When should adults and children be washing their hands? •After arriving somewhere new •Before leaving •After coughing it’s blowing your nose •After using the restroom •After playing outside •Before cooking or eating a meal⁣

At Speak Freely, we have already begun to implement stricter deep cleaning protocols after each 1 on 1 session which includes hand washing upon arrival and before leaving therapy. Our therapists and patients’ health and safety are our number 1 priority!

Happy Holidays from all of us at Speak Freely! Thank you for being apart of our family, and we hope you have a wonderful day with friends & family!

This little one worked on following directions during her first craft activity with her therapist this season. This was a great opportunity to talk about holiday vocabulary like: ornament, bow, ribbon, and globe.

Miss Zoey got to talk about all of her favorite holiday things. Gingerbread, candy canes, and twinkle lights, oh my! What are your favorite holiday things? Comment in one word or emoji below!

Some of our friends are camera shy, but all of our friends like to get crafty This friend decided to think out of the box with globe ornaments this year and had the idea to make it into a fox. The result was a first for our craft room; a fun, forest fox for his Christmas tree.

We love using playdoh in therapy. So many versatile ways to play with it. Penny decided she wanted to “bake” with her playdoh and made several gingerbread cookies in between speech practice. It was her idea to make him with a smiley face because he was feeling happy 😊

Elizabeth loves frilly fun. And when she saw this flower crown Rudolf ornament on Pinterest, her mind was made up that that was the ornament she wanted to make. We labeled parts of Rudolf, she followed sequencing directions, and practiced saying her sentences. This is a great example of how speech therapy is often disguised as a fun, play-based activity!

Crafts aren’t just for the little ones! Jordan was feeling crafty this December & has been working on some ornaments for his Christmas tree 🎄Crafts are a great way to target language and speech goals in therapy!

Don't delay, apply today for DSACT's 2020 PEAK Speech Therapy program! https://forms.gle/QSAdhHKuvEn4KZEH8

Let me introduce Miss Christy! Christy graduated with her Master’s in Communication Disorders from Texas State University in 1993. She has worked for Speak Freely in Austin and Bastrop since 2018. She became interested in speech therapy in college when learning about it when taking a deaf education course. Christy loves working with the diverse populations speech therapists serve. She has specialized training in Talk Tools- Oral-Motor Training, Food Aversion Therapy, PROMPT level one, Selective Mutism training and Floortime Approach. Her favorite toys to incorporate in sessions are bubbles because she has yet to meet a kid who doesn’t love bubbles.
