In the fall of 1978, the city of Houston was stricken with a novel epidemic that stands to this day as the most contagious outbreak ever recorded. With a population of just over 2 million, nearly everyone in Harris County became afflicted within 48 hours—no one had seen anything like it. Investigators would later trace the outbreak back to the Astrodome, originating on the same Monday night that Oilers star Earl Campbell famously rushed for three touchdowns to beat Don Shula’s Miami Dolphins. Fans were screaming, embracing, and foaming at the mouth, and the contagion quickly spilled out of the Dome and ripped through the city, eventually spreading across the continent and reaching locales as far-flung as New York City.

The afflicted were blinded to all but the color blue and driven mad with an insatiable itch. Scratching made it worse, and so it became known colloquially as "The Super Bowl Itch." Amidst all of this chaos, an unlikely hero named Bum Phillips emerged to lead the city through the challenge. He and his team had discovered that there was but one remedy - they called it "Victory."

You're probably thinking: "But Andrew, how's that? I know it played at SXSW and won an Audience Award, but I wasn't able to make those screenings. And then I heard about a weekend run at the AFS Cinema, but I wasn't fast enough and all of those dates sold out."

Well you're right about that. But every once in a while a movie gets made that makes people start to feel feelings again. And sometimes, if we're lucky, the word gets out, and there really is no choice but to extend the run and let more more people feel those feelings. What feelings? I'm talking about that feeling you felt when you first moved to Austin. Because whenever that was, John Aielli was on the air, vibrating through the town and saturating our cultural quilt with his deep appreciation, utter strangeness and, truly, his love.

This is what it's all about my friends. I hope you'll come see it this week, and if you do, I bet you'll cry. And if you've ever felt like this town has changed too much, or that the tech bros won, or whatever, come see this movie, let loose a few tears, relive the last 50 years of Austin weirdness, and fall right back in love with this place.
