Instructors and Students,
The latest news on Coronavirus from the federal government is to avoid groups of 10 and to engage in more restrictive social distancing. Authorities want to "flatten" the growth of COVID-19 infections in the short-term. I think this is reasonable and they want everyone to do their part.
After discussing with several of the staff, we think it is prudent to cancel classes for one week. This will also help support our members whose kiddos are out of school and our first responders who will be putting in more hours. I'll also be cancelling all private lessons for one week as well.
Plan to return to our regular schedule on Monday, March 23, 2020. Wish you all good health and a good week.

The Empty Cup
The Kindle Edition of The Empty Cup is now available on Amazon!
amazon.com The Empty Cup provides readers with the eight keys to developing a proper mindset for success in their martial arts training. Presented in the form of parables, these life lessons are analyzed and explained in a way that is easy to understand. Accompanied by real-life examples from the author...

Excerpt from “The Empty Cup”:
Without question, Bruce Lee was one of the most iconic and skilled martial artists in history. His facility and competence with Wing Chun in particular, and by extension many other martial disciplines, is legendary. But speaking strictly to his usage of Wing Chun techniques, he demonstrated and extremely high level of speed, strength, and skill in their application. This leads many to ask how he achieved this having only studied Wing Chun for approximately three years.
The parable of the open door teaches the most important lesson in regards to training and personal skill development. In particular, skill comes from hard work and practice. There is no doubt that Bruce Lee's extremely high level of skill was a direct result of the diligent, disciplined, training regimen of his youth.

There is a saying in Wing Chun which goes:
"Don't speak of who is junior or senior, the one who achieves skill first is the senior."
Truthfully, it is not uncommon that a newer student joins a school and due to his own hard work and diligence, surpasses many of his classmates who don't practice as much or as often. After all, skill in the martial arts isn't about calendar time, it's about training time. The secret is how many more repetitions you have done than the student next to you, not how much longer you've been enrolled in the school than him.

"The best approach to learning is to assume the demeanor of a total beginner. Not only will this speed up the learning process, it will put one into the proper mindset of being open to new ideas, respectful of the teacher, and attentive to detail. Holding a true "Empty Cup" mindset allows students to more easily learn new knowledge without being hindered by old knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs."
