Yard Dog Gallery is a unconventional gallery in Austin, Texas, that shows work by unconventional artists from the US & Canada. The gallery opened in 1995, showing folk and outsider art from the Deep South. We rather quickly began adding work by artists whose work we loved and wanted to show and that fit in aesthetically alongside what we were already showing, but who were neither folk/outsider art

Song Print #10

Way back in May of 2020, in the early days of lockdown, we launched Jon Langford's Song Prints series, a 10-part series of his song paintings that are a bit smaller and half the price of his standard prints. Circumstances have changed since then, and we're giving Thanks with this 10th and final installment in the series.

Sympathy For The Mekons, painting by Jon Langford.

Here's to a band that deals in the facts of life
In their 10 short ugly years
I wish the Mekons good fortune
I sold them fame and riches
And good health
I like my friends
I feel unfit for them
It makes me sad they'll all be gone
I hold the sword, I hold the hammer
In the winter of the world
History has a stutter
It says w..w..w..watch out!
Lyrics from the Mekons song Sympathy For The Mekons, on the 1987 album Honky Tonkin’

Jon Langford “Our Long National Nightmare Has Just Begun”
Mixed media painting on wood. 2022. 34" x 27"
Jon says, "America dominated my teen years back in Wales - from Moonshot to Vietnam and then on to Watergate. Optimism turns to righteous indignation and finally into cynicism. Hindsight is selective but I instinctively reach back to that earlier self to explain the roots of our current despair. Thought I’d only have to go back as far as Reagan and Thatcher’s unholy coupling but a brief vision of the immortal Henry Kissinger recently wheeled out at John McCain’s funeral (like a guest star on an episode of the Munsters) put this pair of knuckleheads back in the frame. A history painting? A half written song (for sure) and a nod to Goya… 'The sleep of Reason Produces Monsters' - America has an infinite capacity for such products, it appears…"
