November is Prematurity Awareness Month. Preterm birth is defined as birth earlier than 37 weeks of pregnancy. Did you know that nearly 400,000 babies are born prematurely in the United States each year?

The purpose of this month is to give a platform to recognize all the babies being born prematurely and for us to look at ways we can help prevent preterm births. Medical care is vital to the survival of these babies, and the more we can prevent babies from being born prematurely in the first place, the more babies that will have a healthy start to life.

Did you know that your body can start to produce colostrum as early as the second trimester? While some people even leak colostrum prior to birth, it is important to remember that this is not an indicator of milk supply. Colostrum is high in protein, fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, and antibodies that protect the baby from bacterial and viral illnesses. It is a thick, yellowish substance that is commonly referred to as liquid gold.

Because a newborn baby's stomach is so small in size for the first few days after birth, it only takes a little bit of colostrum for them to get all of its benefits. Those tiny bellies fill and empty frequently, which is also due to colostrum: it has a laxative effect that helps the new baby eliminate meconium from its system.

If you are struggling with nursing or pumping, our knowledgeable and supportive IBCLCs can help. Many major insurance plans are accepted! Visit https://www.bfsuccess.com/lactation-services for more info or call us at 512-808-0237.

Power pumping is a technique that involves mimicking the frequent feeding of a baby experiencing a growth spurt, or cluster feeding. During these times your baby's more vigorous, more frequent and longer suckling triggers an increase in the hormones that tell your body to make more milk. This in turn increases your overall milk production.

Power pumping is not a replacement for regular breast pumping to increase supply. Instead, power pumping is intended to boost your progress by replacing one regular pumping session with a strategically designed alternative. It works by repeatedly emptying the breast, signaling the body to make more milk, more quickly. Replace one pumping session with a power pumping session.

If you're concerned about pumping output or milk supply, our supportive and knowledgeable IBCLCs are able to help! Visit bfsuccess.com or call 512-808-0237 to set up your appointment - most major insurance accepted.

We are proud to have two lactation clinics in the Austin Area. Our primary location with three clinic rooms and a large classroom space is located just off Stassney Ln between South 1st Ave. and Congress Ave and our additional clinic is locate at Seton Medical Center on the 8th floor with one clinic room and a pump rental depot. It is important to us that we are able to provide lactation care to all families regardless of financial ability. This means that all Aetna, United, and Seton Health Alliance patients will have access to our services with no out-of-pocket expense. Being in-network allows us to bill your insurance provider directly. We are still able to serve families using other health insurance providers.
