Today I had to say goodbye to a best friend, my ride or die gal, my sweet, silly, quirky girl. Cio-Cio San found her way to me almost 12 years ago through a neighbor who found her on the street when she was 4 weeks old. Her name comes from the opera “Madame Butterfly,” which is the first professional show I was in, shortly before she came into my life. She was the funniest, naughtiest kitty ever. When she was small, she would sleep on my neck and fall asleep purring in my ear. When she got bigger, she would often sleep on my head and hog the whole pillow. She had a million little health problems that, after years of trying to figure them out, and finding the right vet, I was able to get under control and give her a pretty happy, comfortable life. But her little misshapen kidneys finally decided they just couldn’t work any longer and it was time for her to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I went through hell and back to give her the best life I knew how, and I would do it a thousand times over because she was truly a special cat. She didn’t give love freely, you had to earn it. But it was always worth the work. I am a better person and animal advocate because of her. I’m glad I was able to hold her when she took her last breath. My heart is broken. I love her terribly, and I will miss her so much. 12 years just wasn’t enough.

Our governor says we can’t vote by mail so this was an essential trip. Despite the weirdness of it all, it felt clean and safe, and I was the only voter there when I arrived! Early voting = less people. Yay. Go vote, wear your mask, wash your hands, don’t touch your face... but VOTE. Maybe if we all do, someday we’ll be able to vote by mail in a pandemic.
