Back around 2008 I think, the GFA (Guitar Foundation of America) was held in Austin. I saw this Brazilian guitarist who was mind blowingly good. One peculiar technique he had developed for long stretches was bring the left hand thumb to the front to facilitate barrés and wild stretches. I wish I remembered who it was. Anyway during my lesson with Benjamin yesterday we decided to test it as a solution to a prickly section of Antonio Lauro’s Valse Criollo Venezuelan Waltz #3. It has an arduous stretch. Surprisingly, Ben felt this was the best solution. I’m anxious to see how it looks and sounds next week. I’m certain my guitar colleagues will be incensed that I would dare try such a bold technique with a young student. Oh well...
Today the guitar world lost the great Julian Bream. In tribute here is one of my favorite Bream recordings, Condé Claros by Luys de Narvaez played on the vihuela:

This is my student Aaron. He is 6. I started him at 3 1/2. He is a shining example of what happens when the parent is plugged into the process and they make the practice happen. Both parents have pretty intense work schedules but they make it work. Here we are playing A Toye from Suzuki Guitar Book 2. I’m really proud of him.

Here is a little ditty by Steve Morse that I used to play a lot at weddings...called, wait for it...Highland Wedding. One of these days I’ll see if I can adapt the whole shredder part last half for solo guitar, but for now it would seem that many a bride has been quite content to walk down the aisle to this part. I’ve been at home making video for my whole online makeover. I hadn’t touched this one in over a year and I’m surprised it came back so easily. I’ll need to redo it though. This take isn’t worth doing a multi cam sequence for but thought I’d share anyway.
Aaron proudly displays his new Kremona guitar. Big improvement over that guitalele thing.
Aaron came in today and played a smokin’ rendition of Lightly Row on his new Kremona guitar this morning. Then he wowed me with Aunt Rhodie and Song of the Wind and part of May Song. Now we just need some sticky stuff to keep the guitar from sliding off his shorts.
Carolina is doing great work improving her tone on Allegro from Suzuki Guitar Book 2. Look how nicely her right hand sets up as she concentrated on playing with nails.
Sean Behrens, a guitarist and teacher in Austin, TX performs Verano Porteno, a Tango by Astor Piazzolla on classical guitar.
Having worked with students on this piece, this annotated manuscript speaks volumes. LOL!!
F Chord Work Around
Simply don’t play it when it comes around in a song
My 10 yr old student, Satvik tearing it up on Carcassi Etude in A minor. His tremelos are coming along nicely. Still a little trouble on that horrible shift to the 3rd position, 2nd inversion B flat Major chord. I don't think that part ever really gets easier. A constant spot practice area...
I have learned and relearned it. It is a staple and you're never done improving on it...ever...
Invest time into learning a masterwork like Capricho Árabe because you will be playing it for the rest of your life.
Do you think spending 21 minutes on 12 measures of music is too much? While it is tempting to dive straight into playing a beautiful piece like Capricho Árabe, you will save countless hours of revision and correction by learning it the right way, from the beginning.
This is the way I like to work with students at Classical Guitar Corner, and if you have a similar work ethic then you are a good candidate to study through our comprehensive curriculum. Find out why it is worth the investment here:
