From Ray: “The physique improvement makes for a great before and after, but it’s far from the most meaningful change that occurred since I began strength training. In the photo on the left, my low back hurt, my neck hurt, and I suffered from Crohn’s disease. I was ignoring my physical existence and dedicating my life to work. After quitting my corporate job, I took nine months off to focus on becoming strong and healthy. I ran through the Starting Strength Novice Linear Progression and let go of all of my preconceptions about health, fitness, weight gain, and nutrition. I overcame the baseless fear that somehow lifting heavy weights is dangerous and came to understand that the most important aspect of improved health and fitness is directly correlated to how much weight is on the bar. For the first time in my life, not only was I big, strong, and healthy, but I became an athlete, competing as an amateur fighter in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.

The realities of health and fitness are simple, and to those that haven’t been through the process of becoming stronger, they may be controversial:
1. Training to achieve a specific outcome is a better use of time than random exercise.
2. Strength is the most useful outcome to train for because it has the most profound impact on health, fitness, aesthetics, and quality of life.
3. The Starting Strength method is the most effective strength training program in existence.

Michael has been training with us since June 30, 2020. He started with his dad to spend more quality time together. He enjoys his time in the gym with his dad and the coaches. He has noticed that he is more functional in everyday activities. 👟

Mike did a DXA scan in July and then again in October. In 3 months, he lost about 2% body fat and increased his lean tissue by 5lbs.👏
.
.
Here are Mike's starting and current numbers:

Squat: 205 to 370lbs
Press: 85 to 165lbs
Deadlift: 265 to 425lbs
Bench: 165 to 275lbs

You should stretch if it feels good after your workout. Static stretching shouldn't be done before your workout. If stretching doesn't feel good, don't do it. 👏

"Who can Power Clean and how does it enter one's program?”

Starting Strength Coach Jarrod gives 3 examples of who wouldn't power clean.

He also explains why someone would perform the power clean in replace of the deadlift and how these two are similar.

[11/09/20]   Meet Angie. She is the Operations Manager for Starting Strength Austin. Angie didn't do any barbell training other than the bench press in about 5 years. When she started on August 11th, she was deadlifting 65lb. On September 30th, she deadlifted 200lb!

She couldn't have done this without the coaches telling her how to fuel her body differently and without their expert guidance and necessary changes to her programming.

Aside from her strength gains, she has noticed an increase in her flexibility and decrease in lower back, upper back and hip pain. Angie still has a long way to go and needs to listen to the coaches more to keep progressing properly, but she is grateful for the progress she has made and (believe it or not😁) is enjoying it most of the time!

Ok, you caught me. I'm Angie and I'd like to thank all the members for encouraging me with their own dedication and welcoming me as I take this journey with you.

[10/15/20]   Marcus Monroe received amazing results at his last DXA scan! He lost 5lbs of fat, gained 8lbs of muscle and lost 2% of body fat. Great work!

[10/05/20]   This is Aaron Frederick. Aaron has a lot of fun here at Starting Strength Austin (as you can tell by his Google review 🤣). He usually has the best socks, unfortunately no Kermit ones this time 🐸.⁠

Here he is with Coach Kyle getting his lifetime 455x5 rep deadlift PR. He is seen lifting a weight that was previously his 1 rep max, for a relatively easy set of 5. 😯⁠

Aaron is one of our strongest members. He has climbed to the top of the Starting Strength Austin leaderboard for the deadlift. 💪⁠

Aaron is a pleasure to coach and we are inspired by all of his progress! Keep up the excellent work! 👏
