Mark Diffley, SSC, is the Head Coach and Operations Manager at Starting Strength Austin

Mark has been involved in barbell coaching for over a decade. He discovered Starting Strength in 2011 while coaching CrossFit and received his Starting Strength Coach (SSC) credential in January of 2013. Mark has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and was immediately hooked by the mechanical analysis and logic found in the Starting Strength method. Mark is a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt and a former firefighter in the Atlanta metro area. In the Spring of 2021, he moved to Austin, TX to be the Head Coach at Starting Strength Austin. Mark is excited for the opportunity to teach The Method and share the benefits of strength training with an even greater audience.

From Ray: “The physique improvement makes for a great before and after, but it’s far from the most meaningful change that occurred since I began strength training. In the photo on the left, my low back hurt, my neck hurt, and I suffered from Crohn’s disease. I was ignoring my physical existence and dedicating my life to work. After quitting my corporate job, I took nine months off to focus on becoming strong and healthy. I ran through the Starting Strength Novice Linear Progression and let go of all of my preconceptions about health, fitness, weight gain, and nutrition. I overcame the baseless fear that somehow lifting heavy weights is dangerous and came to understand that the most important aspect of improved health and fitness is directly correlated to how much weight is on the bar. For the first time in my life, not only was I big, strong, and healthy, but I became an athlete, competing as an amateur fighter in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.

The realities of health and fitness are simple, and to those that haven’t been through the process of becoming stronger, they may be controversial:
1. Training to achieve a specific outcome is a better use of time than random exercise.
2. Strength is the most useful outcome to train for because it has the most profound impact on health, fitness, aesthetics, and quality of life.
3. The Starting Strength method is the most effective strength training program in existence.
