Last Letter Films, a student-run production company that is part of Villanova University's Social Justice Documentary Program, is in the process of creating a documentary focused on the resilience and pride of the Afro-Puerto Rican culture and community. A legacy of slavery and colonialism in Puerto Rico has embedded anti-Blackness into the landscape, manifesting as the nationalized Mestizaje narrative, the erasure of Black identity, and the segregation of Afro-descendant communities. Through our documentary, we aim to bringing global awareness to these social, psychological, and physical racial injustices in Puerto Rico.

We are looking for donors to help support our mission. 🇵🇷✊🏾

¡Tienen copias limitadas!

¡Además les recomendamos chequear la novela histórica The Taste of Sugar de la autora puertorriqueña Marisel Vera (@writingbee2 ) que también está disponible en @wepamercadodelpueblo !

It’s been more than 3 years since Jurakán premiered. Yesterday we screened it at @wepamercadodelpueblo and the public reminded us why we made the movie. We made it because we felt the necessity of knowing where we come from and where we’re going. Thanks to the Puerto Rican Cultural Center you can gift the DVD to your mothers, family and friends this Mother’s Day. Jurakán: Nation in Resistance is available now at ¡Wepa! Mercado Del Pueblo (2559 West Division Street) in Humboldt Park, Chicago. They have limited copies!

The felt pulled to return to the island. Little do they know it's an ancestral call to uncover secrets out in plain view. Failure will destroy mountains!

Exciting and funny play - written by Tekina-eiru Maynard - features original music, Puerto Rican folkloric dances, and traditional sticks and machete fighting.

Bilingual play based in Puerto Rican history and current events, explores the value of preserving cultural heritage in these complex times -- when issues such as destruction of nature and gentrification are pitting modern progress and economic advancement against traditional values, nature, and community wellbeing.

Sembrando Herencia 2021 - Valiente Soy was filmed in front of a live audience on December 11-12, 2021 at the Carver Theatre at the George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center in Austin, TX.

Featuring original music by Tekina-eirú Maynard (copyright).
See end of film for full credits.

ASK HOW YOU CAN SPONSOR FUTURE PROJECTS!!

Sembrando Herencia 2021 was made possible in part with sponsorship from the MAP Fund, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; and Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Carver Theatre was sponsored by the City of Austin Parks & Recreation, Museums & Cultural Programs.

Our season was additionally made possible through Cares Act/ARP support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, and the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.

Dia de Operito Naguti
Puerto Rican Cultural Center
Sunday, November 7, 3-6pm CST

FREE - MASKS REQUIRED

WHO ARE YOUR ANCESTORS?
Bring your maraca -- and an offering of music, poem, sweets (dessert), or flowers to honor them.

Sunday's celebration is dedicated to Operito Naguti -- the Spirit of our Ancestors -- and honors our loved ones from this lifetime in Soraya (paradise), our blood Ancestors of the distant past, and others.

Similar to Dia de Los Muertos, this tradition is Taino. And always there will be Areyto -- Taino ceremonial dance!

WHO WILL YOU HONOR?
This gathering will take place at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, 701 Tillery St, #13 in Austin.

YARA TAÍNO & GUAYTIAO is the indigenous community of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center. We are an active, spiritually minded community who celebrate our heritage and share lifeways on how we live in relationship with Nature. Our members represent world indigenous cultures.

The Puerto Rican Cultural Center's season of cultural outreach is supported by grants funding, CARES Act, and ARP support through the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
