“She said it's common to see 60-year-old homes torn down to make room for new construction. Masino will tell you families have either been priced out or offered big money to leave. That's gentrification. She said there are several groups working together to fix the problem by repairing things.”
The only historically black university in Austin is stepping in to preserve the East Austin community Austin nonprofits are teaming up to repair homes for low-income homeowners free of charge, in hopes it helps families stay in the community amidst rapid growth.

“As Austin grows, so does its homeless population. Homelessness happens for many reasons. It may be an unexpected large bill, escaping an abusive relationship, addiction, mental illness or job loss.
Austin is not an inexpensive city to live in. Rent for a one bedroom apartment near public transportation is simply not affordable for someone working a minimum wage job.“
