Today I got to detail this absolutely gorgeous Harley Davidson Fatboy. It needed a little TLC to make the chrome bling & it did just that once all the chrome & paintwork was cleaned. The chrome was polished with Autosol

Bronze is a beautiful material needing little maintenance. The patinated area of the bronze is not an applied color but where the metal has been treated with chemicals (e.g. copper sulfate or ammonium chloride etc.) to accelerate a chemical process, which would occur naturally in the right climatic conditions and given enough time. Once the right color is achieved, the surface is lightly waxed to stabilize the color.It is best not to handle the sculpture if the conditions are very warm, due to heat softening the waxed surface holding the color. The surface should only ever need to be dusted lightly with a soft cloth.
When moving or handling the sculpture it is easiest to wear soft fabric gloves or use soft cloths to cover your hands and contact areas. It is the moisture in the skin that will break down surface treatments.
This is even more important when touching the polished areas. Some areas that are polished up to reflective may need cleaning occasionally, due to the fact that people love to touch them! I find a good car metal polish the best and nothing compares with Solvol Autosol Metal Polish. This is available in tubes from good car accessory shops, (though the bigger chain stores will probably try to sell you a cheaper substitute...don’t get it because it does not even compare!).
The most important thing to remember is that this polish, needed to clean up any blemishes which might appear on the polished areas, has to be used exceedingly carefully in tiny quantities so as to not overlap onto any patinated area. A very small quantity should be squeezed from the tube onto perhaps an ear-bud, and that rubbed on to control it only has contact with the polished area. When the polish has covered the part needing to be cleaned, (just light smears), then a soft cotton cloth can be used to burnish up by rubbing until reflective, again making sure the cloth does not rub off the waxed colored area adjoining.
Not wanting to make this sound complicated, I have only gone into these details knowing if they are followed, then it is very simple for the long term! It is best not to let any marks remain too long because any moisture from fingers would have a progressive effect, making the cleaning more difficult later.
NB. The slate base can be dusted with a soft cloth, but if it needs ‘freshening up’, then a small amount of black shoe polish can be applied again using a soft cloth. Make sure the polish does not come into contact with the base of the bronze as it may stain. Rub the polish in until the slate shines. This will get rid of any grease marks or fingerprints.
NB Please note these comments are from my own personal experience and work well for me on my bronze sculptures. I normally use LG2 bronze or gunmetal or very occasionally Phosphor bronze. www.autosol.com
