3047 minutes... that’s almost 51 hours I’ve spent training my mind on this app. That’s like a whole work week and overtime of focusing on mental health. There is no right way to meditate, pause, reflect, or focus in happiness/contentment, you just try your best.

You must understand your brain is just an organ... it might be how we express our consciousness but it’s not who we are. Changing your inner narrative, your tendency to emotionally attach to a trains of thought that cause all sorts of worries and emotional distress... this is the key to me.

You don’t eat everything your stomach growls at if you’re smart. You don’t act on every whim of your libido(hopefully 😂)... why would you treat your brain/thoughts/emotions differently? Some of them are BS, just observe them objectively and decide which ones serve you best.

Always feel free to DM me for questions about anything. If you’re looking for a good App to practice staying present I would try @headspace

MY FACE 😂...

It looks like I care deeply for my patients and am passionate about wanting them to understand WHY and HOW to feel better/stay better...

OR maybe I look like I’m about to fight you if you don’t take my recommendations seriously and stop procrastinating on your healing journey 🤨

Could be both. Anyways, if you’re a patient of mine, you’ve probably seen that look a few times.

Why would I care so much though?!? It’s because I’ve been through it. It’s not a competition, but I had more physical pain/injuries in my 20’s than most people have in a lifetime, and a dash of depression, self-loathing, and mindnumbing hopelessness to go along with it at times.

When you tell me your story, whatever it is, I’m always excited to help you. People need help, the human body doesn’t come with a manual, and even the ones that are written require advanced degrees to truly understand. Let me help you understand why your body could be giving you trouble, and give you options to help... Stretches, exercises, 1-1 trainings, posture/workplace ergonomics, adjustments, referrals to other treatments, whatever it takes. There are no shortcuts in healing, and the process can be very frustrating at times. That’s why it’s good to have someone on your team that actual cares and has experience overcoming what you’re dealing with. That’s me 🤠

The easiest way to prevent neck, shoulder, and back pain... strengthen your back body! Your fancy brain is no good to you if you hurt all the time or can’t move because your body breaks down.

Remember the human body doesn’t care AT ALL what you are going to feel like when your 60/70 years old. There is no default towards pain/disease free old age, it’s all choices you’re making meow.

Let’s face it, the computers won. We can’t live without them now so we have to mitigate the damage they’re doing to our bodies.

THE MAIN THING technology effs up is your balance of musculature from BACK muscles to front muscles. There should be a 3/2 ratio with back stronger.

Stretch your pecs, quads and hip flexors, massage your traps hamstrings and glutes. Strengthen(think endurance more than mass gain)your entire back body/kinetic chain.... rows, pull-ups, pull downs, Superman’s, bird dogs... remember for every inch your head comes forward towards those stupid screens your neck weighs another 8-10 pounds to your neck muscles.

Some of y’all look like vultures at the computer, this WILL catch up with you either by pain or dysfunction.

Institute a back body regimen into your routine, if you correct your structure, your function will improve. A lot of y’all reading this already know, progress happens quick with focus on great postural muscular/tone! DM me for specific questions!

Did you know I teach private yoga lessons at my practice, Austin Chiropractic and Yoga?!? If you’re a patient they include an adjustment as well 😮

Over the years I’ve seen thousands of patients/yogis come through the door with various injuries and pains. Through this experience, I’ve designed specific exercises/stretches/poses to make sure you stay safe, improve your practice quickly, and stay pain free during the process. Whether it’s neck and shoulders aching, low back pain, tight hamstrings, or you just want to learn more about your body, private lessons are the fastest way to improve.

I remember 8 years ago when I had my first private yoga lesson... and I thought WOW that’s for sure not what I was doing beforehand 😅. If you want to feel more challenged, while at the same time fixing your body’s asymmetrical structural and muscular patterns that eventually lead to pain, this service is for you.

!!!Foam rolling workshop APRIL 11th at 5:30 @blackswanyogaaustin WESTGATE!!!

First picture is me pretending it doesn’t hurt, second picture is the truth! Let’s work on balancing asymmetries and poor muscular/postural patterns! We’ll be getting our roll on to great rolling classics like Bob Seger’s “Roll me Away” and Ludacris “Roll Out”. Foam rolling is one of the easiest ways to combat the poor technological patterns our bodies fall into on a daily basis. We’ll go over anatomy and how to properly diagnose what’s tight, what’s weak, what needs to stretch and what needs to strengthen. This will have you feeling great after and able to duplicate the results in your own!

Tickets are 20 dollars when you bring your own roller, or 40 and I’ll supply you with one to keep!

One of the things that differentiates me from other docs is I have a LOT of personal experience overcoming various injuries. See past injuries post...
***
While healing from neck, shoulder, disc and rotator cuff injuries, I spent a lot of time in Physical Therapy, which I’m a huge advocate of. This is one of their favorite exercises that’s great for everyone to do. It prevents neck and shoulder pain from poor technological patterns. It’s improves mobility of the neck, shoulders and thoracic spine. It is a deep burn, enjoy.

"Y"
Raise your arms to a 45-degree angle with your body, forming a "Y." Keep your body and arms straight, palms facing each other. This exercise targets the anterior [front] deltoids.

"T"
Extend your arms straight out to the side to form a "T." This variation hits the trapezius, medial [middle] and posterior [rear] deltoids, balancing the anterior work from the "Y" movement.

“M”
Straighten your arms at your side with your hands pointing down and perform the same arm movement as you did for the "T." This exercise specifically targets the posterior deltoids.
***

Make sure you are constantly lifting up and activating your entire back body, you can see if one of the photons my chest is raised off the ball by activate my back line/extensors. Keep your neck long and squeeze your shoulders away from your ears the WHOLE time. Breathe 😉 This along with stable slow movement of the exercise creates better postural tone in the back body. Strengthening your back body’s postural tone is THE secret to keeping a healthy spine and structure. You can do it on a flat bench, or a stability ball, or on a coffee table/bar. You can add weight 1-8 pounds depending on how much weight you can keep great form with. Introducing Y’s T’s and M’s! Perform 3 sets of 5 reps of each movement 1-3 times a day. Get it!

I get knocked down... but I get up again... you’re neeeeeva gonna keep me down

I almost left Austin three years ago this month, I called my dad (so as not to worry my mom) and told him I didn’t think I could do it anymore. I was tired of having to struggle so hard, tired of failing and worn down by pain. It seemed like a everything in life was against me. Whether it was financial hardships/debt, friendships, family, or relationship problems… Physical injuries requiring drugs or surgery, mental/emotional issues requiring medication and therapy, or my decade long battle with chronic pain… Those years of struggle looking back are what shaped the person I am today.
***
It felt like I was dying then, and with my hair falling out, falling to my lowest weight since middle school, and my body continuously failing me it was tough to see a way out.
***
The parts of me that really weren’t me (societal norms or ways of acting/feeling that didn’t serve me) were being burned away. I just kept going, I started listening to a small but clear and powerful voice inside me. I found the grace of life, found the gratitude for it and love for myself. Life taught me the only way I would learn... the HARD WAY🤷🏻‍♂️that I DON’T KNOW HOW TO GIVE UP 💪🏼 I can only hope you go through something that helps you believe in yourself, no matter what, and shows you who you really are. If you’re going through your winter now, and need someone to talk to, I’m here for you ❤️
***
I will be forever grateful for the Austin community for helping me open my heart. Whether you’re are friend, patient, colleague, lover or stranger, the love I’ve been shown exists in this world has changed me. Every time you mushy yogis hug me, my heart cracks open a little more. Every time those who care about me smile and look me in the eye, I soften just a little more.
***

You have to keep breaking your heart until it opens -Rumi

Only when you have trusted and broken your heart enough times, will you reach a point where you’ll realize that love is not a game of defenses. Love is a space where you have to drop your guards.

Oh man, this one cuts me deep.
***
I had been in daily chronic neck pain from a disc bulge for over 4 years before I finally gave in and changed my diet. I know a lot of you are in pain reading this, you know pain changes you. I know what it’s like to feel hopeless, to hurt so bad that I can’t lie on my back on my bed because it’s too much pressure, I know what it’s like to look like I have the body of an athlete but only be able to do the elliptical for 10 minutes because I hurt so bad, I know what it’s like to bang my head against the wall just to feel SOMETHING other than that burning sensation. Over time it wore me down, and I lost my fire, lost myself. I became controlled by the pain, it determined what I did, what I ate, when I went to sleep, when I could travel, how long I could work . In trying to avoid it, it actually took over my life. I tried EVERY physical treatment for my body and nothing worked... I knew I had a bad diet, but really how much harm could that be doing? 🤔
***
I noticed that when I had teddy grahams and 2% milk(basically a daily snack of mine), my neck would hurt worse. That combined what what I learned in chiropractic college convinced me to make what I think is tmost important self improvement decision I’ve ever made. I decided to cut out bread and milk. 2 weeks later I had my first pain free MOMENT in over 4 years. From then in it’s been a steady climb to having a great diet(thanks @thebalancedboho )
***
I’ve been pain free for over 3 years now, it’s been a long journey! I’m finally coming back around to letting go the fear of re-injuring/aggravating my neck or other old injuries. Back to experiencing life instead of hiding from the pain. Changing my diet changed my mood, decreased my pain, changed the way my body looked and worked. Give it a shot, DM me for questions, I live for this s**t, and I can and will logic you into taking better care of yourself!
