What is IASTM 🧐

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization is the use of tools during bodywork. Our most utilized tool is cupping, although we also use other tools like scrapers, trigger point tools, floss, and body tempering rollers.

Each tool has it's own features, but in general when using IASTM it creates controlled microtrauma in the area being worked on. This will insight a tiny bit of inflammation which can bring more "healing cells" to that area. It also is thought to reduce pain based on the pain gate theory.

Using IASTM is effective because soft tissue, especially fascia, is dense with mechanoreceptors. The mechanoreceptors allow or restrict the glide between the tissue layers. Fascial restrictions can turn into adhesions if they are not addressed. When there's restricted glide or adhesions in an area it can cause pain, tightness, and reduced ROM. Restoring the glide can make you feel great and perform at your best!

"How often should I schedule a massage?" 🧐

Receiving sports massage can help improve mobility, circulation, pain control, stress and mentality, injury prevention, recovery, aesthetics, and performance! It can help you look, feel, and do better!

If you are training at maximum effort (ie prepping for an event, competition, or just living that strong AF lifestyle) once a week or biweekly is recommended. If you're training for maintenance, every 3-4 weeks is recommended. To keep up with her training, @sammy__v has been receiving massage biweekly to keep her body going!

If you are recovering from an injury or seeking pain relief then we recommend coming in every 1-2 weeks (the more frequent the better) until it is under control, and then you can adjust the frequency as needed!

πŸ”Ή30 minutes can be a great option for the more frequent sessions. We can still perform cupping and scraping and can focus on one specific area for the session without over doing it on your body, schedule, or wallet.

πŸ”Ή60 min sessions can be used weekly, or anytime! This is the most common session booked. We can get focus on just one area that needs attention, or we can do a quick touch up on the whole body.

πŸ”Ή90 min sessions are a great option for whole body detailed work. If you reeeeaallly need a problem area taken care of, but also want your whole body worked on then the 90 min would be the best way to go.

What the neck!? ✨

Neck pain is one of the most common issues we see in our clients.

Here's some basic info about your neck! Your neck consists of about 20 muscles, 7 vertebrae, and some very important nerves and arteries. When you active your lateral neck muscles unilaterally it will result in you turning or tilting your head to one side. One side shortens while the other side lengthens. When you activate your lateral neck muscles bilaterally, or the muscles in the front or back of the neck it will result in you bringing your head forward/down or backward/up. The neck muscles also help you swallow, breath, and move your jaw.

Dysfunction in the neck can happen when you repeatedly over-do any of these movements, or have a traumatic incident. If you are constantly turning your head one way to look at a screen or sleeping in a weird position every night, those muscles could become tight and cause pain. Or if you are constantly looking down at your phone the lateral, front, or back neck muscles could become tight and cause pain. The average adult head weighs 11lbs and is meant to be stacked and stabilized directly on top of the neck, so in the age of looking down at phones and computers, this position is a big contributor to neck dysfunction!

What you can do: be aware of what posture you spend most of your time in (check ya neck), find healthy ways that fit your lifestyle to move and adjust your neck position, or if your neck health is compromised add something to help keep the tissue healthy such as yoga, massage, cupping, or chiropractic.

Why are your "Lats" important? 🧐

The latissimus dorsi or "lats" are the biggest muscles on the upper body, starting at the back of the arm/armpit area and attaching onto the spine, pelvic bones, and lower back fascial fibers.

The Lats responsibilities include rotating the arm towards the body (medial rotation) and bringing the arm down to the side (adduction), up in front (extension), and horizontally abducting. They also assist with breathing, bring the whole shoulder girdle down, assist in side bending, arch the spine (trunk extension), and anteriorly tilt the hips. So they are only kind of important πŸ˜‰

The lats work alongside with the glutes to stabilize limbs during whole body movements.

If you have WEAK lats it could be difficult to stabilize the pelvis, side bend, or support your body with your arms.
If you have TIGHT lats it could affect shoulder movement and mobility, and your shoulder girdle could feel like it's stuck down/forward.
For those with scoliosis one lat could be tighter on one side than the other. Contrarily if you overwork one side of your lats and not the other for long periods of time it could potentially lead to some abnormal spinal curvature.

Luckily, the lats are pretty easy to get to and see because they are very superficial. They respond well to massage, rolling, and activation!
