Tara Levy Nonprofit Consulting
You're an expert in your mission. I'm an expert in nonprofit management, leadership, and strategy. Imagine what we could do together! Let's talk.
I actually really enjoy working virtually with groups, and I'm always looking for ways to level-up the experience and make it more user-friendly and enjoyable.
Totally adding a cursor parking lot into the slides I'm working on right now.
What other tips do y'all have?
The ED posting for Women In Neuroscience closes on Tuesday. We’re looking for a dynamic leader who is excited to champion our mission and path forward.
Please check out our job posting and make sure the talented folks in your network see it in time to apply:
Got plans for the long weekend?
You still have time to finish up your application to serve as Women In Neuroscience's next Executive Director (or to remind your friend to do it) before you head out to the lake!
Dive in to the details at http://bit.ly/WiNposting !
I do A LOT of things as a nonprofit consultant and work with 5-6 organizations at a time, but as I look at my to do list this Monday and think about the major things happening at Women In Neuroscience, I'm definitely enjoying and feeling the sticker on my laptop. I'm serving part-time as WiN's Interim ED, and here are 3 things that should be on your to do list, too:
1. Spread the word about the opportunity to apply to be WiN's full-time ED. The application is live and you can read all the fantastic details at https://bit.ly/WiNposting -- tell your amazing friends
2. Continue our commitment to support this summer's class of interns despite UT's overly strict application of SB17 by raising money through our at https://lnkd.in/gd2-fbR9
3. Launch our Neural Network with the first Quarterly Conversation on Thursday at 6:30pm CT with Dr. Lief Fenno. You can sign up to for free at https://lnkd.in/gQzyS93i
I am so proud to be part of the Women In Neuroscience community, and I’m excited to share that we’re kicking off the search for our next Executive Director. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Executive Director to champion Women in Neuroscience—our organization, the women in the field today, and the women who will define the field tomorrow.
We are looking for someone who is a confident communicator and relationship-builder, able to strategically navigate and connect diverse stakeholders to support women in the confident pursuit of their career paths.
Check this out and share with your network of awesome people:
What's nicer than positive feedback?
Unsolicited, specific positive feedback.
I facilitated a board training earlier this week, and the Executive Director forwarded me this note a board member sent to her.
“I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for today’s training. I’ve served on three boards, and no one has ever provided as clear and useful information as Tara did today. Being a board director involves a lot of details, and some of it can get complicated with legalities. She provided the perfect balance of 'pay attention to the legal traps' with 'do your duty to the mission.' I appreciated having that clarity and thank you for arranging the training. “
The lessons?
Long-term: Reach out to me if you ever need a board training.
Short-term: Send someone an unsolicited, specific positive note telling them how they make a difference in your work. You will make their day.
We've been so busy having fun and getting things done, that I forgot to share the fantastic news that I began serving as Interim Executive Director for Women In Neuroscience last month!
WiN believes that "less bias = better science" and is building a diverse community of female students to pursue neuroscience and neurology. There is so much good in what they do and how they do it, and I'm thrilled to be part of the WiNning team.
Austin nonprofiteers, this reads like a dream job in so many ways. Starting and ending with the fact that you get to work with the incredible Barry Silverberg!

Another lesson in nonprofit leadership from The New York Times puzzle today: Interim roles provide strategic time for reflection while maintaining steady operations.
I built Central Texas' initial Interim Executive Director program fifteen years ago, and right now, I'm enjoying serving serving as Interim ED of the Austin Young Chamber, where the board, staff, and members are doing incredible things everyday.
Join us this Wednesday at The Long Center for the Performing Arts for our 3rd annual "Give Back Get Loud" event, where we are hosting more than 30 nonprofits with opportunities for young professionals to volunteer and get involved in their community organizations!

Thanks to the The New York Times Sunday puzzle for another fun day and for the reminder to everyone that the Board of Directors hires (and supports, evaluates, and partners with) an Executive Director.
If your board ever needs some help or direction, call me. I love to solving puzzles on Sundays and all week long.
The Austin Young Chamber had so much fun at the Circular Austin Showcase last night. It's an honor to co-host this impactful event with the City of Austin's Economic Development Department and Austin Resource Recovery. Thank you for your partnership and leadership, Madelyn Morgan and Meghan Doherty!
Last night 8 exciting entrepreneurs pitched their environmentally-friendly businesses, and The Conscious Pet won big. They are doing great things, and the prize money will be a great investment in their work.
Thanks to AYC's amazing Dinah Ibarra for her perpetual skills and grace in planning a great evening as the culmination of a strong program!
Thanks to our incredible panel of judges: Adrienne Longnecker, Brandi Clark Burton, Clairissa Simmons, Erika Haskins, Juli Berwald, and Skyra Rideaux. You were a magical team of subject-matter experts and thought leaders!

Just back from a fantastic few days in Santa Fe with CASA of Lea County and my awesome kiddo. Love when the fun I have working so easily connects to the fun of travel and adventure!
In addition to covering tons of ground with CASA's incredible Executive Director and Board of Director, Ben and I covered lots of ground with museums, art, tacos, and whatever Meow Wolf is.
I have been an ardent believer in interim leadership as a transformational tool for decades, and I especially love when I have the opportunity to serve in this pivotal role for an organization I value.
I'm looking forward to working with the team of board, staff, and members at the Austin Young Chamber!
Austin Young Chamber announces departure of CEO, appointment of interim executive director - AYC: Austin Young Chamber The Young Chamber Board of Directors has appointed Tara Levy, an experienced local nonprofit leader and strategist with more than 25 years of expertise, as interim executive director and will announce details of the search for a new organization leader in the coming months.
It was such a joy to attend Women In Neuroscience's first fundraiser last night. The WiNterns shone as they interviewed women leading so many frontiers (space: Ellen Ochoa, sports: Jody Conradt, and medicine: Leah Harris).
The best excuse for getting off-schedule when facilitating?
Trick-or-treating preschoolers!
At today’s strategy retreat for Capital City Village, a preschool Halloween parade came through for trick or treating. CCV is supports aging in place, so this was a pretty awesome multi-generational moment.
I had such a great time today, and I was especially touched to get back to my email afterwards to find a note from one of the participants with some "action shots" from the presentation.
I love that I come across people who are delightfully kind and thoughtful, and I hope you'll join me in sharing some love right back. The nice person who sent this is the owner of Big Top Candy Shop on South Congress. Go get some fudge or rock candy this week--or get Ben's favorite: the chupacabra soda.
Feelin' like it's 2019 because I'm delivering a conference keynote today IN PERSON!
So happy to be with all the fantastic city business districts at Souly Austin's Annual Meeting today with the City of Austin Government's Economic Development Department.
I'll be talking about organizational development and getting attendees thinking about how to leverage their current growth stage--and prepare for what's coming next!
When I started my own consulting business, I dreamed I'd be able to manage well enough to take a little sabbatical, and I'm thrilled to be home and back at work after 3 weeks of adventure and recharge in Europe with my 15-year-old son.
Thanks to lots of front-end communication, planning, tech tools, and especially my fantastic clients and collaborators stateside for synching up smoothly.
Today I am diving into my inbox and building out fresh to-do lists!
While I'm playing catch up, if you’d like to go ahead and get on my calendar so we can dive right in on whatever project or conversation you have in mind, please consider this link to be a bit like a Community Chest card in Monopoly: skip go, skip jail, and go directly to a meeting:

Y'all, I'm so excited to be a Strategic Advisor for a new start-up to provide a quick, easy, and well-supported route to launching charitable adventures.
As they build the product, they'd like to learn from some folks who've had the vision, inspiration, and commitment to start a nonprofit organization.
If you've started a nonprofit, will you please take this survey?
If you know someone who's started a nonprofit, will you please tag them or share it with them?
Thank you!

Experiences starting a nonprofit Tell us more about your experience founding a nonprofit and help us to make the process easier for others.
Usually work-from-home Tara does calls from the office desk or kitchen table, but today, I was upstairs in the reading nook of my bedroom because summer-vacation Ben was still asleep when I needed to do video calls.
Anyhow, someone asked about the light switch cover, and I mentioned that I've had it since I was a child. I've found a place to hang it everywhere I've lived my entire life.
That's right. Since I was a child, I have identified with sharing my experience and advice as a business model. (And talking about the connection to is a whole other rabbit hole to explore.)
I wonder how many of my fellow consultants are life-long Lucy fans.
After coworking at a friend’s pool this afternoon, I met a nonprofit client to share an ice cream flight (that is indeed a thing!) at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams to build out new job descriptions for their organization. I love that I have collaborators who feel like co-conspirators in making adulthood and work turn out to be so much fun!
Because in my spare time I also do nonprofit consulting and support:
Daily Mail Online on Twitter “$1MILLION painting is ruined after 'bored' security guard draws eyes on faceless figures 🤦 Full story: https://t.co/9l8ThcRwkP”
Capital IDEA is a magical nonprofit that I've loved working with over the years. They help non-traditional students get the education, skills, and support they need to enter a skilled occupation and earn a true living wage. Their staff is made up of some of the kindest, most helpful problem-solvers you'll ever meet, and as their long-time Executive Director Steve Jackobs prepares for a well-deserved retirement, the board is preparing to hire the next leader for this great team.
Please check out the job posting and share with your network of nonprofiteers who would enjoy working someplace amazing with amazing people doing amazing work:

So excited to be back with the HERdacity squad this evening to serve as the host for my friend Marissa Paine's candid conversation.

I got to my meeting at SAGE Studio early today and got to sit at one of the artists' work stations. Even the extra minutes of being with these clients are full of joy!
Check out their artists' work in their new, huge gallery at Canopy or online to support the burgeoning careers of these artists with intellectual differences and disabilities!
Yesterday was the last session of The Center for Professional Education at UT Austin's Nonprofit Management Certification Course, and we graduated a group of amazing nonprofit leaders in New Mexico.
We wrapped up with this slide with a scene from Grease and commitments about using their knowledge, network, and resources to do even more great things.
And though this McSweeney's article is from last year, it just popped up in my feed: (https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/rydell-highs-reopening-plan).
Hopefully we're getting closer to the end of the pandemic (if you're in Austin, go get vaxxed Friday with TogetherAustin and get a 1-day Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL) wristband) (and if you're not in Austin, go get vaccinated somewhere else!), but I think we're only at the beginning of me going down a Grease rabbit hole.
Feel free to check-in on me later. I will likely be working on puns for nonprofit courses based on Grease lines and lyrics...
So exciting to see the success story of one of my current client org's in the local paper today.
