You may have seen the wo rd "Aphasia" in the news recently. We' ve seen some articles with some misinformati on regarding Aphasia, and we'd like to cle ar that up.
Aphasia is a disord er caused by damage to the bra in tissue responsible for language, usually on t he left side of the brain. T he condition can manifest as difficulty understandi ng language, producing language or both. Aphas ia is most commonly caused by stro ke, but can also be caused by he ad injuries, or tumors. Aphasia can al so come on gradually as seen in Prima ry progressive aphasia (PPA.) This is a conditi on that slowly damages the parts of t he brain that control speech and langua ge.
Aphasia is NOT a Cognitive disord er and DOES NOT affect a perso ns intelligence.
