The story is often told of a monk who lived in isolation in a cave where he painted beautiful murals on the wall as part of his meditation practice. With his strongly developed concentration and acquired skill, he painted a ferocious tiger that appeared as real as any live one. It seemed so real, it scared him to death!

All things that arise in your mind are like the monk's brush strokes on the cave wall - none of them, not even the ones that seem to be the most solid, are composed of lasting, unchanging substance.

When the fear feels stuck, realize that you are clinging to a perception that is merely painted on the walls of your mind. It's this clinging, not the danger, no matter how genuinely threatening it might be, that is the cause of your greatest distress.

The proper response is threefold: continual mindfulness of the fear, deep compassion for the suffering it is causing, and cultivation of equanimity that allows you to stay with it. You will find that the dharma will do the rest.

Friday Meditation with Krishna

If you could change one little something in your life right now that causes you frustration or discomfort, and you and only you have the power to adjust it, what might that be? 

Think about it and bring those thoughts to the meditation class on Friday. We are doing a mediation that calls forth the fire of Shiva (one of the Hindhu Trinity of gods) known as the destroyer or regenerator that restores balance and activates the healing process (“Tershula Kriya”).

Remember, it has to be something only you can control; an attitude, a desire, a frustration, or a wish etc.  Let’s give this meditation a chance to support you and for you to plant seeds that will support your intention to clear it and uplift you in the process. You can do this. And, no matter what, I'm with you.

Healing. It happens in stages and phases, with an unpredictable number of layers and levels. It happens no matter how loud or quiet life is, but it does seem to crave something calm. It is often full of rotten, twisty, gnarled pieces; things that would growl if they were asked to create sound. It is a pushy teacher. It wrings me dry in the worst of ways. There is pain. It is hard.

And,

It will pour love into the palm of my hand, if I let it. It will fill me with reverent curiosity when I deliberately meet it; enough to be able to sit with some of my as-yet-unanswerable questions, doing nothing more than breathing them in. I am caught off guard by how deep the learning and unlearning can go. I am startled by the clarity that can come, sudden & strong. Healing is often a patient teacher. There is alchemy in its many inconvenient challenges, and it wrings me dry in the best of ways. Even though it is painful and hard, there is beauty.

All of the above is true simultaneously, but some days I exist in the first paragraph while other days I exist in the second. And no matter which perspective I’m in, every feeling is being given room to breathe, to speak — because denying a feeling doesn’t make that feeling disappear; it only postpones the moment when I’ll have to face it.

I’d rather face it than bury it.

I’d rather a temporary sting than a permanent numb.

I’d rather heal than not.
