Happy Austin Christmas!

With Christmas quickly approaching, make sure to check out all the Austin Holiday traditions available. There is Mozart's light show, ice skating at Whole Foods, Trail of Lights, and The Nutcracker to name a few.

The trail of lights has gone through some transitions throughout the years. In fact, it was not always the named the Trail of Lights. In 1965, it was called the Yule Fest with it being a drive through experience from the 1970s to late 1990's. However in 2009, the attraction almost came to an end. Due to budget constraints; the attraction had to be scaled back, and with the next two years not having the event at all. However, with the help of sponsorships and donations, the event is back and bigger than ever with more than 2 million lights seen around the park.
We have dedicated three of our baskets to the trail of lights.

Send a season's greetings with this basket full of delicious holiday popcorn, jam, brittle, and more.😋

History of Zilker Park: Andrew Zilker arrived in Austin at the age of 1876 at the age of 18. With only 50 cents in his pocket, he began work as a dishwasher. However, he discovered real money in the manufacturing of ice. He climbed up the ladders within months and became foreman for an icemaker.
Soon after, he owned his own ice plant. With this success he bought 350 aces between the Colorado River and Barton Creek. He used the clear Barton Springs water to make the ice itself.
Zilker also was a volunteer fireman, Director of the First National Bank, Water and Light Commissioner, and served both as alderman from the old Tenth Ward and president of the Travis County School Board. He was also the first bottler of Coca-Cola in Austin.
In 1917, he cut a deal giving Barton Springs and the surrounding areas to the Austin school district. The area is now know today as Zilker Metropolitan Park. Ariel photo from 1938.

Austin History:
Nomadic tribes such as the Tonkawas, Comanches, and Lipan Apaches used what is now known as Barton Springs to camp and hunt. During the 1700’s temporary missions were set up in the area. However, it wasn’t till the 1830’s that permanent Anglo settlers arrived and named their village Waterloo.
By 1839, Waterloo was growing quickly and was chosen to be the Capital location of Texas. However, the name “Waterloo” was replaced to “Austin” in honor of Stephen F. Austin, “the father of Texas.”
