Your Kids (And You) Are Going To Love ‘Ada Twist, Scientist’ On Netflix The show is a great example of STEM for kids.

[08/05/21]   In an effort to protect our most vulnerable clients and family members, we have reinstated our mask requirement for the waiting room. Austin is back in Stage 5 and we are committed to protecting our unvaccinated pediatric population.

maybe more like one sound at a time...

Happy National Speech-Language Pathologist Day, friends! 💚

[04/08/21]   Miss Susanne (to a friend wiggling in her chair): do you need to go to the bathroom?
Friend: no I just need to boogie.

[03/03/21]   Austin Area Speech & Language Services will continue to follow CDC and Austin Public Health guidelines by requiring face masks and encouraging social distancing in our waiting area. We believe this is the best way to protect our therapists and clients from the ongoing pandemic. We also believe that by doing so, we hope to not contribute to another surge in Covid 19 cases in our area. Please contact your therapist if you have questions or concerns about our continued adherence to the wearing of masks.

[01/28/21]   Austin Area Speech & Language would like to express our deep sadness upon the tragic passing of a beloved pediatrician, Dr. Lindley Dodson. Our mutual patients have always spoken so highly about her kindness, compassion and commitment to the many children she treated. Our hearts go out to Dr. Dodson's family, friends and especially her children. All remain in our hearts and prayers. 06/25/2020

Here are 9 hand sanitizers that the FDA warns can be toxic if absorbed by the body

Please be aware that not all hand sanitizer is created equal. We are missing seeing all of our wonderful clients in person but know that continuing to conduct sessions via Zoom is what is best for everyone's health and well-being. The Food and Drug Administration over the weekend issued a warning on nine alcohol-based hand sanitizers manufactured by Eskbiochem SA de CV in Mexico that... 05/18/2020

Special Birthday Cello Music

In a Zoom speech therapy meeting (client is blacked out) a friend played "happy birthday" on his cello for Ms. Susanne's dog Oliver's birthday. Ms. Susanne was wearing a special headgear for Friday. We are having great success doing speech online with the kids who are willing and able to participate.

Tomie DePaola, Beloved Children's Author And Illustrator, Has Died

We are on our second copy of Strega Nonna. Why? Because everyone loves it. Very sad to hear this. The author and illustrator — who, by his own reckoning, worked on more than 270 titles — died Monday at age 85. Among his classics is the Caldecott winner Strega Nona, a seemingly ancient folk tale. 03/29/2020

Very real advice. Everyone is doing their best in this very difficult time. Being kind and staying connected is vastly more important than an arbitrary academic goal. When we emerge from this, who do we want to be as families? Please please cut yourself some slack. 03/28/2020

Enter an Archive of 6,000 Historical Children’s Books, All Digitized and Free to Read Online

Okay not for everyone but maybe interesting to kids? We can learn much about how a historical period viewed the abilities of its children by studying its children's literature.

As seen on a walk in Ms. Susanne’s neighborhood. If zero “ homeschooling” happens but everyone stays healthy, (mostly) kind to one another, engaged in some activity (making pancakes is both a math, science and self care lesson) then we consider this a success. There’s time to “catch up”( whatever that means) later. For now let’s be kind, patient and well. 03/22/2020

A few ideas to keep wee ones busy and still growing their minds

In an effort to create a safer environment for our clients we are removing our fabulous toys and books from the waiting area. Although we’ve doubled down on wiping/cleaning them in recent weeks, it’s basically impossible to stay on top of it during this time. The continued good health of our clients and their families is our highest priority. Sorry kiddos.

A Teacher Did an Experiment to Show the Power of Handwashing, and You Can’t Stay Unimpressed

And this is why Ms. Susanne is such a weirdo about clean hands. Sometimes a prime example is better than words — especially when it comes to explaining something to children. That’s exactly what Jaralee Metcalf, a teacher from Idaho, decided to do to show her pupils the importance of washing their hands properly. And now the whole world is following her exam... 01/06/2020

Thanks Nancy Thomson for sharing this with us. "I just imagine how much deeper the bond will be."

Although it’s not necessary, getting a thank you card like this makes all the hard work worth it. They come and we help and then they’re gone which is as it should be. This one was a little harder to bid farewell to. Be well friend!

[10/14/19]   Friend comes in wearing a Beatles t-shirt. Friend tells Miss Susanne that it’s the Beatles. They discuss all the band members’ names.
Miss Susanne: Who is your favorite Beatle?
Friend: I like Bingo
Miss Susanne: (smiling) yeah, me too
(George is really her favorite but who can pass up “Bingo”?)
