eautiful for You, Safe for Your Baby
Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers know that everything they place in or on their body is passed to their little one. Do you understand what you’re putting on your body? Are you sure that those hard-to-pronounce ingredients are not causing harm to your baby? When we were pregnant with our sons, we unfortunately had to answer “No” – and I’m a doctor! That’s why

Does the idea of pregnancy scare you? You’re not alone: for many women the entire experience can be overwhelming – the way that your body changes, “What does that feeling mean?,” the birth experience, worries about possible complications, and of course what comes afterwards.
In addition, many women that we talk to are also very concerned about how pregnancy will affect their skin, beauty routines, how they’ll look after all the weight gain.
But it doesn’t have to be a time of anxiety. You’re beautiful and we guarantee that your significant other thinks so too! Besides, it’s important to maintain positive self-image and self-esteem during pregnancy. Doing so definitely contributes to a happy and healthy pregnancy.
Follow along and we’ll show you how to overcome these problems in 9 Easy Steps:
1. Work Out
Exercising 2-3 times a week all throughout the entire length of your pregnancy is good for you.
When I say work out, I mean
- walking
- swimming,
- cycling or spin classes
- yoga and water aerobics
- weight lifting (if you were a lifter before pregnancy).
Not only does working out during pregnancy deliver multiple beauty benefits, but multiple studies have shown that women who are active and workout have significantly decreased recovery time after giving birth, and fewer overall complications associated with pregnancy and delivery.
A note of caution: Strenuous workouts are contraindicated for those at high risk of pregnancy complications and those in the third trimester.Remember to consult your doctor before beginning any strenuous workout routine.
2. Drink Lots of Water
Water is an essential part of looking your best during pregnancy. It also helps to maintain good health and healthy skin. Remember that you lose a lot of water simply through breathing and dehydration can cause fatigue and sleepiness. Hydration not only refreshes you and gives your baby and body what it needs, but it definitely keeps your skin well- hydrated for a nicer glow.
3. Eat a Well-Balanced Diet
"Just say No" to fast food and other takeout meals , as many choices include products prepared with trans-fats and oils, which are poorly processed by the body, and have a wide range of long term effects. Whatever diet you do choose, ensure that it’s one with a healthy blend of fats, protein, fruits and veggies. You’ll often get most of your required vitamins and minerals this way.
Stay away from processed foods, especially foods high in sugar or other carbohydrates. These foods can increase your risk of developing gestational diabetes, or even permanent Type 2 Diabetes.
If you must have coffee or caffeine, limit to no more than two cups per day, and definitely nothing past 5 PM. Remember that caffeine is a stimulant and may affect your sleep and rest. Moreover, excessive caffeine can be harmful to your unborn child.
4. Embrace Your Body
Let’s face it: Pregnancy may not feel particularly sexy at times. You’d be surprised to learn how many people (men and women) find the pregnant body is beautiful and sexy! Growing a baby is a gift only women were given so the physical changes are something that should be embraced. Embrace your newly large b***s, love how fab your bump makes you look, and appreciate your new shape – you might never look like this again so make the most of it!
5. Sunscreen
Do you want to know the #1 secret to healthy skin and a wrinkle free life? Sunscreen and moisturizer.
Using these products (or one combination product) will get you 90% of the way to healthy skin. Make sure that your sunscreen has an SPF of at least 15 and look for oil-free moisturizers. Use daily as part of your beauty routine.
6. Stretch Marks
Realize that there's not much you can do to prevent stretch marks from forming during your pregnancy. Slow, steady weight gain that is appropriate for your size and height can reduce the likelihood that stretch marks will appear.
Olive or Coconut Oil may help to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. Ask your dermatologist about stretch mark treatments after you've delivered your baby. However, you may find that stretch marks fade over time.
7. Say “Bye Bye!” to Stressful People in Your Life
An old saying is that you are the composite of the 5 people that you spend the most time around. Research has even shown that who you spend the most time with strongly influences who you are.
Around a lot of smokers? Chances are massively increased that you too will smoke. The same goes for people who drink too much alcohol, or eat too much food, or have a gloomy outlook on life. Choose wisely and you’ll have a much better chance of a stress-free Baby Bump Journey.
8. Choose Well Made Maternity Clothes
Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean that you can’t look your best.
Sure, it’s fine to relax around the house in oversized and comfy clothes, but again, how you dress DOES affect how you feel. Do you think that they guy in the sneakers and ratty shorts feels at his best in the boardroom? So spend the time to seek out clothes that flatter you bring out your best. Some sites we’ve found to have excellent selections:

9. Pamper Yourself
Go to the salon for a facial, or the spa for a massage (pregnancy safe one of course). Being pampered will make you feel truly beautiful and sexy while relaxing you at the same time! (Just avoid the nail polish).
Also, make it a point to get a good night’s sleep, every night. Pregnant women need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Plenty of rest will give you more energy during the day and will help thwart bags and dark circles that can mark your appearance during pregnancy.
= Summing it All Up =
Most people around you are very excited for you and love to watch your belly growing. Focus on those who make you feel great during your pregnancy and who continue to tell you how beautiful you are. The more positive your attitude is, the better you'll feel about yourself and your process!

How Do We Ensure Our Product's Safety?
Through our 7-Step Screening Process
At Lucina MD, it is our mission to ensure that you and your baby are safe from cosmetic and skin care ingredients known or thought to be harmful.
Given the absolute flood of information available in the scientific literature and the general public internet, you may be wondering how we screen our products.
It all starts with Dr. Whitney-Cashio's commitment to a judicious, careful, and systematic approach to evaluating each and every product.
First, we screen all ingredients against a list of products deemed generally unsafe for pregnant and lactating women. Such ingredients include (but aren’t limited to) parabens, phthalates, and retinoids.
We then run each ingredient through a 7 step process to evaluate safety:
1. Toxnet
2. LactMed
3. Teris
4. EWG
5. COSING
6. PubMed
7. Each product's MSD Sheet
1. TOXNET - a toxicology database operated by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and National Institutes of Health. It is an international database of the known and suspected hazards of ingredients, street drugs, etc.
2. LACTMED - is also run by NLM/NIH and is specifically aimed at ingredients that are known or suspected of causing harm to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
3. TERIS- the Teratogent Information System and exists to help physicians and scientists evaluate potential harmful (teratogenic) ingredients.
4. EWG - the Environmental Working Group, who’s mission is to empower citizens to live a healthier life.Their SkinDeep database is an excellent source of information about cosemetic (and other) ingredients.
5. COSING - the European Union’s Cosmetic Ingredient database, and contains a list of do not include ingredients; therefore, if your cosmetic contains such an ingredient then you cannot sell it in an EU country. Very thorough.
6. PUBMED- run by the NLM, links to just about every quality scientific publication availabe since 1951, and older papers are available through sublinks.
7. MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheets. Every chemical or ingredient in the US that humans can come in contact with is required to have this sheet, which lists such information as known hazards, hazardous conditions or concentrations, etc.
Finally, I use my years and training in developmental biology to assess whether an ingredient is safe enough to use.
Would I feel safe letting my wife and family use that ingredient? Only if the answer is a resounding “Yes” is it included in our products.
We’re serious about you and your baby’s health.
Wishing you all the best!
