We are so excited to announce that this year’s Art of Giving Ambassador is Ella Gottschalk, Neurosurgery patient and daughter of our very own, Dr. Hilton and Jessica Gottschalk. Ella has been an enthusiastic part of many Trust events over the years and to say she is excited to help inspire others in support of Dell Children’s, is an understatement.
About Ella
It was May 30th, 2012 when Ella was diagnosed with hydrocephalus due to aqueductal stenosis. The Gottschalk family were living in Chicago the day they watched their 3 month old baby girl be wheeled into her first life saving brain surgery. They remember the fear, remember seeing everything blurry because their eyes were filled with tears, they remember wanting to step in and take the pain and all she was going through - away from her. It was just 2 months later, the Gottschalk’s moved to Austin and discovered that Ella’s shunt was failing and at just 5 months old, would face another brain surgery but this time in Austin at Dell Children’s - their first introduction to the incredible world of Dell Children’s.
Fast forward to 2020, Ella had yet another shunt failure and another life saving surgery/revision at Dell Children’s. Every year on Ella’s “shuntiversary” in May, the Gottschalks try to make it a point to be grateful. Grateful for their friends, family, doctors and nurses who helped guide them through those dark and scary times.
That day every year they reflect on the the incredible doctors and their skills, the nurses who took all the time they needed to explain everything in detail, the amazing science of her shunt that literally keeps their daughter alive, and the unwavering support of our friends and family who dropped everything to be there.
Ella LOVES WITH EVERYTHING she’s got and FIGHTS WITH EVERYTHING she’s got. This girl... “Though she be but little, she is fierce.” - Shakespeare ❤️❤️❤️
We’re so proud of you, Ella!!
