This month we’re exploring the rolling hills of south-central Minas Gerais and the award-winning growers of the Campo Das Vertentes. Known for its crowd-pleasing coffees, several farms from this region are recent winners at Cup of Excellence.

First up is a microlot from Henrique Dias Cambaia and his farm Fazenda Samambaia. In addition to producing COE award-winning coffees, Henrique co-founded Sancoffee, a 20-member, B-Corp cooperative focused on sustainable production. And just last month Sancoffee won the SCA’s 2024 Sustainability Award! 🏆️

Next up is our Campos Das Vertentes regional blend of amazing coffees from the region's many award winning farms that showcases the region's distinct flavor profile: chocolate and caramel followed by a clean, sweet finish.

And last but not least is our Cafezinho blend, crafted to be the perfect bean for your daily Brazilian-style sipper.

As we near the end of Women's History month we are thrilled to spotlight a brand new award-winning coffee from our good friend and partner Luiza Dias Pereira Lobo who won 4th place at the 2023 Cup of Excellence in the experimental category 🏆

Luiza is a fourth-generation coffee producer and a member of the Pereira family, founders of the Sertão Group and Carmo Coffees. These two organizations are credited with revolutionizing specialty coffee in the Carmo de Minas area. In addition to managing Fazenda Santo Antônio, Luiza plays an integral role in the family's roasted coffee business.

The award-winning coffee came from a lot of SL-28, a cultivar developed by Scott Labs in Kenya and not often found in Brazil, that was manually harvested with the aim to pick only the ripest fruit. After harvesting, it was delivered to the family's processing station at nearby Fazenda Irmãs Pereira, where it was rinsed and floated to eliminate potential defects. Next, it was transferred to sealed drums for a 72-hour fermentation aided by Selvatech yeast, a proprietary culture developed from wild yeast collected at the Pereira family's farms.

After fermentation, the coffee was dried slowly on raised beds inside a greenhouse with UV light filtration. The total time for this meticulous process was a whopping 48 days, resulting in a complex and fruit-forward coffee with brilliant acidity and a heavy, syrupy body.

Luiza's hard work and patience with this special lot has paid off and we were fortunate to purchase it at auction. Snag a bag of this exceptional coffee today!

In October our director of coffee Eric Wolf had the honor of being one of the judges for the Best of Cerrado competition in Brazil's Cerrado Mineiro region. Eric tasted some amazing coffees in the competition's three categories: Natural, Induced Fermentation, and Pulped.

After the award winners were announced, we were fortunate to place the winning auction bid on three exceptional coffees in the Natural category: 2nd place winner José Augusto, 3rd place winner Elen Lorencini, and 5th place winner Jander de Oliveira.

We can't wait for the coffees to arrive and look forward to sharing them with you. Stay tuned for more!

We Detach from the Commodity Market, Pay a Consistent Price, and Pay Well
Traditionally coffee prices are based on the commodity market. High quality coffees receive a “premium” over the market price while lower quality coffees are sold for a “discount.” However, the commodity price fluctuates greatly and growers often operate in uncertainty, not knowing if the price they will receive will compensate them for the extra steps they took to produce high quality coffee. Our relationships are not based on the commodity market, but rather we pay a consistent price for high quality coffee that is well above the C Market and even the Fair Trade price floor.
