This month we’re exploring the rolling hills of south-central Minas Gerais and the award-winning growers of the Campo Das Vertentes. Known for its crowd-pleasing coffees, several farms from this region are recent winners at Cup of Excellence.

First up is a microlot from Henrique Dias Cambaia and his farm Fazenda Samambaia. In addition to producing COE award-winning coffees, Henrique co-founded Sancoffee, a 20-member, B-Corp cooperative focused on sustainable production. And just last month Sancoffee won the SCA’s 2024 Sustainability Award! 🏆️

Next up is our Campos Das Vertentes regional blend of amazing coffees from the region's many award winning farms that showcases the region's distinct flavor profile: chocolate and caramel followed by a clean, sweet finish.

And last but not least is our Cafezinho blend, crafted to be the perfect bean for your daily Brazilian-style sipper.

As we near the end of Women's History month we are thrilled to spotlight a brand new award-winning coffee from our good friend and partner Luiza Dias Pereira Lobo who won 4th place at the 2023 Cup of Excellence in the experimental category 🏆

Luiza is a fourth-generation coffee producer and a member of the Pereira family, founders of the Sertão Group and Carmo Coffees. These two organizations are credited with revolutionizing specialty coffee in the Carmo de Minas area. In addition to managing Fazenda Santo Antônio, Luiza plays an integral role in the family's roasted coffee business.

The award-winning coffee came from a lot of SL-28, a cultivar developed by Scott Labs in Kenya and not often found in Brazil, that was manually harvested with the aim to pick only the ripest fruit. After harvesting, it was delivered to the family's processing station at nearby Fazenda Irmãs Pereira, where it was rinsed and floated to eliminate potential defects. Next, it was transferred to sealed drums for a 72-hour fermentation aided by Selvatech yeast, a proprietary culture developed from wild yeast collected at the Pereira family's farms.

After fermentation, the coffee was dried slowly on raised beds inside a greenhouse with UV light filtration. The total time for this meticulous process was a whopping 48 days, resulting in a complex and fruit-forward coffee with brilliant acidity and a heavy, syrupy body.

Luiza's hard work and patience with this special lot has paid off and we were fortunate to purchase it at auction. Snag a bag of this exceptional coffee today!

In town for SXSW? Swing by the South by São Paulo event at The Sunset Room right across the street from the Austin Convention Center for free coffee, espresso, nitro cold brew, and free 12 oz bags ☕️

In October our director of coffee Eric Wolf had the honor of being one of the judges for the Best of Cerrado competition in Brazil's Cerrado Mineiro region. Eric tasted some amazing coffees in the competition's three categories: Natural, Induced Fermentation, and Pulped.

After the award winners were announced, we were fortunate to place the winning auction bid on three exceptional coffees in the Natural category: 2nd place winner José Augusto, 3rd place winner Elen Lorencini, and 5th place winner Jander de Oliveira.

We can't wait for the coffees to arrive and look forward to sharing them with you. Stay tuned for more!

Our signature medium roast, Bossa Blend, is effortlessly enjoyable yet delightfully intricate. Boasting caramel sweetness and bold flavors of red fruits and pecans, Bossa pays homage to the complex harmonies and sensual pleasures of the Brazilian music that inspired it 🪇

It's wicked cold in the lower 48 this week 🥶 Fortunately January's featured microlot coffee is the perfect antidote. This naturally processed Obatã cultivar boasts flavors of raspberry, mulled spices, and dark chocolate.

About the grower: our friend and partner Luiz Saldanha has grown exceptional coffees at the edge of possibility for over 20 years. Embracing the challenges of growing south of the Tropic of Capricorn in Norte Pioneiro do Paraná (one of the few places on earth where coffee is grown outside the tropics), Luiz employs innovative growing and processing techniques for quality-focused flavor, making Fazenda Califórnia's coffees globally sought-after and truly distinctive.

Bem-Vindo ao Paraná 🇧🇷

Brazil’s Norte Pioneiro do Paraná is one of the world’s only coffee growing regions outside of the tropics, lying just below the Tropic of Capricorn 🐐

Unlike most tropical regions, Norte Pioneiro experiences four distinct seasons, which, while challenging, can produce uniquely sweet and creamy flavor profiles under the careful cultivation of skilled growers 🌱

This month our featured regional blend embodies Norte Pioneiro's coffees, offering sweet caramel notes, a creamy body, and a smooth, silky finish.

Please note that our roastery will be closed 12/25 and 12/26. Any orders received after today, Thursday 12/21, will be roasted and shipped on Wednesday 12/27.

Have you heard the word? Boas Festas, our winter seasonal blend, is here to ring in holidays. Experience delightful hints of chocolate and roasted nuts, dried red fruits and spicy mulled wine to get you in the festas spirit 🌰🍒🍷

Ps. There's still time to get your coffee orders in before the holiday break! 🎁☕️ Thursday 12/21 is our last roasting day so any orders received after 12/21 will be roasted and shipped on Wednesday 12/27.

Continuing with this month's exploration of the Alta Mogiana region, we've put together a blend of our favorite coffees from award-winning growers in this part of São Paulo state.

Fun fact: Alta Mogiana was one of the first Brazilian coffee regions to receive an Indication of Origin designation, a sign of how unique these sweet, full-bodied coffees are ☕️🇧🇷

Photos from Casa Brasil's post 11/14/2023

This month's featured microlot coffee hails from the Alta Mogiana region of south central Brazil. Grower Felipe Luiz Ramos de Carvalho won 18th place in the 2022 Cup of Excellence for this naturally processed Catiguá cultivar. Tropical and chocolaty with hints of lime zest.

This month's Explore Brazil box includes a signature dark roast blend, a regional blend from one of Brazil's first Indication of Origins, and a Natural processed Catigua that placed 18th in the Cup of Excellence.

Photos from Casa Brasil's post 10/24/2023

This month's featured regional coffee comes from the high-plain savanna of western Minas Gerais. The Cerrado region has a long, dry harvest season—ideal conditions for growing sweet, chocolaty and full-bodied naturally processed coffees.

Our Cerrado Mineiro blend showcases some of the finest coffees and growers in the region and is available now on our website. Saúde!

Designed for espresso, our Alquimista Espresso Blend shows why great Brazilian coffees are perfect for espresso. Sweet milk chocolate and caramel flavors nuanced with notes of fresh nuts and a touch of citrus make it perfect as a straight espresso or as the espresso component of your morning cappuccino.

The Alquimista blend is back this month, along with Cerrado Mineiro and one of its most well-known growers, Gabriel Nunes.

When we were tasting coffees last harvest at Cooperativa Agropecuária do Vale do Sapucaí (COOPERVASS), one coffee really stood out. This microlot is from a new partner, Andre Barhouch Carvalho Vilela and his Fazenda Santa Rufina. This naturally processed Yellow Catuai is fruit-forward with strong notes of caramel and chocolate. We are proud to bring his coffees to Texas for the first time and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

What better way to celebrate Brazil’s independence this month than with a little Samba, one of Brazil's most treasured growing regions, and a beautiful microlot from Andre Vilela and his Santa Rufina.

This month we celebrate two centuries (and a skosh) of independence with classic songs that celebrate Brazil and the Brazilian way of life.

It’s Simple. We Love Brazil. We Love Brazilian Coffee.

We work directly with Brazilian coffee growers each year to source best-of-harvest coffees and bring them back to Austin, Texas where they are roasted fresh-to-order in small batches.

We Drink a Lot of Coffee
We travel to Brazil each harvest to taste hundreds of coffees from throughout Brazil’s coffee growing regions. We are constantly seeking new partners and tasting how the peculiarities of each year affect the harvest.

We’ve Found Some Great Partners
After nearly a decade of doing this, we are fortunate enough to have developed great relationships with some of Brazil’s top growers.

We Detach from the Commodity Market, Pay a Consistent Price, and Pay Well
Traditionally coffee prices are based on the commodity market. High quality coffees receive a “premium” over the market price while lower quality coffees are sold for a “discount.” However, the commodity price fluctuates greatly and growers often operate in uncertainty, not knowing if the price they will receive will compensate them for the extra steps they took to produce high quality coffee. Our relationships are not based on the commodity market, but rather we pay a consistent price for high quality coffee that is well above the C Market and even the Fair Trade price floor.
