The entire staff we encountered at CTG was always generous with time. Kristen, my son's SLP was absolutely amazing. She brought her full attention to him, (and I'm sure every other client,) every single week. He has graduated and it was the happiest, yet sad day in our house. So happy with his progress, but sad to have this time with Kristen come to an end.

Capital Therapy Group provides speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy for childre We utilize a family-centered approach to therapeutic care and strive to go above and beyond the average therapy experience.

Our team of therapists is dedicated to improving the lives of children, adults and their families.

To parents of children with already identified communication delays- feel free to scroll past this post, you’ve already identified your child benefits from support and these numbers are not relevant - your child’s progress is ❤️

To parents considering a speech and language evaluation: It can be really difficult for parents to know when to get a speech and language evaluation - especially when they are constantly bombarded with various information and it’s difficult to know what to believe or what is best for your child.

It also gets tricky because there is a HUGE range of average communication development, and commutations skills are way more and way broader than I could include in a “quick” guide. As a result, I always recommend to get an evaluation if you - or anyone else - thinks one is needed. Often that means trusting your gut as a parent, but I think it’s equally important to trust if someone else thinks it’s necessary too.

The truth is: some kids qualify and demonstrate a need for intervention and some don’t- you won’t know unless you see a speech pathologist! AND just because a child does not qualify at one time in their life, does not mean they will not at a later time.

🐣 Easter is just around the corner, which means kids will be opening/hunting for eggs soon!

Did you know Easter eggs are useful in promoting speech and language skills?! I actually use these year round, as it’s one of my favorite activities to do with my speech clients!

♥️SAVE this post so you can see how to target speech & language skills during their activity.

Rather than just opening eggs quietly, teach your child:

◾️VERBS
◾️LABELING
◾️REQUESTING
◾️FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS
◾️EXCLAMATORY WORDS

Remember to MODEL these words vs. just asking questions constantly.

For example, instead of asking, "Do you want to open it?", you can model, "open egg" etc. The sentence length will vary depending on where your child is at. So if your child is currently producing single words, you would use "open", but if your child is starting to put 2-words together you can model, "open egg".

💬Will you be hiding eggs for your little one? What do you usually like to put inside?

💌SAVE, TAG, SHARE this post with other families who may want to try these tips!

Some kids are totally fine with being asked question after question- and in fact, many kids thrive with the attention and/or getting to talk about their areas of interest. More often the kids that either enjoy or tolerate questions are the kids who find talking to be easy.

But when talking is hard for a kid- being asked questions over and over can be so difficult that they may shut down- and here are some reasons why you might see this.

I also think that sometimes parent anxiety over their child not talking increases these types of questions because they feel it gives their child more opportunities to speak. And sometimes we are just so proud of their progress we ask questions in order to show others what they’ve learned.

I’m not saying to NEVER ask questions because asking and answering questions is a huge part of communication. I AM saying to try to be aware of how often you are asking questions. I try to say 3-4 statements per question I ask!

💕Pioneering child psychologist Jean Piaget once said, “Play is the answer to how anything new comes about,” and this is true for your child’s discovery of new words and new foods. It’s a vital component of cognitive development.

💕This is especially true for toddlers. When a two-year-old has begun to engage in pretend play, you’ll notice it throughout the day and not just when pretending with stuffed animals, dolls or other toys. When in the kitchen, the wooden spoon might suddenly transform into a telephone as your toddler puts it up to his ear and pretends to call Grandma to tell her what you’re baking together. At mealtimes, penne pasta becomes a trumpet as they “toot-toot” through the tube of pasta throughout dinner!

😊Unless it’s becoming too much of a distraction and you feel the need to redirect, try to embrace these playful moments. Your toddler is practicing problem solving, expressing their feelings via this pretend play, and learning about symbols.

✨BONUS!✨Early symbolic play is the foundation for understanding numbers and letters and, ultimately, learning to read.

🤔Use your own imagination to model all the possibilities: Green beans might transform into two walrus tusks emerging from under your top lip, or a bread stick might become a fairy wand. 🪄🧚‍♀️🪄When we respond to our children’s playful communication, that connection is priceless and always memorable.🥰
