👉Black History Month, which is celebrated each year during February, is an important month of both remembrance, recognition, and education and provides an opportunity for Americans to learn details of their nation’s history that, unfortunately, are far too often neglected. During Black History Month and throughout the year, it is crucial to acknowledge the impact of notable Black figures on our society, their struggles and to honor their history, culture and achievements.

👉Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History designates a theme for the year’s Black History Month. This year, the theme is Black Health and Wellness. This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of contributing (i.e. doulas, midwives, naturopaths, etc.) and takes a look at how American healthcare has often under served the African-American community.

👉As we celebrate Black History Month, we also recognize that we must continuously work together today to create a society that is equitable for all 🙌 🇺🇸 🙌

Today, we celebrate the achievements and message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Inspired by the fact that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an official day of service and that today coincides with Dr. King’s Birthday, The Arboretum Washington Prime Group created birthday kits that will be distributed to The Settlement Home for Children 👈🏻 These kits will be distributed to The Settlement Home children to make their birthdays extra special 🎉 🎈 🎊
The Settlement Home for Children (The Home) is a licensed nonprofit organization that serves individuals who have experienced severe emotional trauma, abuse and neglect. They provide 24-hour care to help children in foster care access the materials and support they need to restore and preserve a permanent sense of well-being. Their mission is to promote healing and growth in children, young adults and families by providing a continuum of care, support and resources. Each of their programs build a foundation for children so that they can develop a set of skills and beliefs that lead to self-efficacy.
