Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE), University of Texas at Austin

A UT PETE Doctoral Graduate making a big impact in El Paso ISD

The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program prepares teachers and coaches to help all students stay active and healthy for life.

Our public school system provides the best delivery system available to reach all segments of our society, with the message of the importance of early motor skill development, regular physical activity, and healthy lifestyles for all ages.

We think our physical education teachers (future and current) will appreciate this as well as anybody who believes plenty of time spent in unstructured, active play is critical to a child's mental and emotional development.

(You knew we were going to say this, but ...) We just happen to have one of the top national "importance-of-play" experts here in the College of Ed - Dr. JOE FROST - and he does cool stuff like consult nationwide on the design of developmentally appropriate playgrounds and play settings. We also have a professor - Dr. DARLA CASTELLI - who's a pioneer in the study of the relationship between obesity and cognitive health (FYI - her studies show obesity's a BAD thing for a child's brain) and the importance of keeping kids active. So there you go.

The College of Education - Schools Should Play Primary Role in Boosting Students' Physical Health

Schools (should) share a lot of the responsibility when it comes to keeping kids healthy and active, says a new Institute of Medicine report written by our Dr. BILL KOHL and Dr. DARLA CASTELLI. A new report issued today by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and developed by two University of Texas at Austin professors, says schools should play a key role in ensuring all students have the opportunity to engage in at least 60 minutes of vigorous or moderate-intensity physical activity each day... 05/30/2013

Moving for a Better Mind « Know

The CoE's Dr. DARLA CASTELLI is on the UT homepage right now in a story called "Moving for a Better Mind" - it includes a great video. Check it out! - Darla Castelli is proving the link between fitness and brain function. Now she hopes to change attitudes about the importance of physical education. Watch a...

The College of Education - Moving for a Better Mind: Physical activity boosts children's cognitive h

More SUBSTANTIAL PROOF that activity improves learning! Horns up for our Dr. DARLA CASTELLI! At a time when schools are facing unprecedented budget cuts and trimming the programmatic fat, physical education often is one of the first things to be reduced or cut. But what if physical education classes weren’t “just” about giving children an opportunity to move for a few minutes and relieve... 05/06/2013

Hey PETE friends! I was asked to share what my JH athletics/PE kiddos did recently in honor of all the Bostonians and others affected by the bombing. I'd heard about "Run for Boston" on their fb page and decided that all of my classes should participate in the movement. Our athletes ran a mile and our PE students ran one lap (or more if they chose) on the track. For the first time all year, every single student ran the entirety of what we'd asked them to do. It was truly inspiring!

Who worked with Dr. Jensen and Pam Buchanan in the Autism Project?

Today's WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS day and probably a good time to recognize some of our College of Ed folks who are working very hard to help families with children who have autism and, through scientific research, to discover the cause of autism and develop effective interventions. Dr. GREG ALLEN, Dr. MARK O'REILLY, and JODY JENSEN and PAM BUCHANAN w/ the AUTISM PROJECT are some of our "heroes" in the CoE who have a significant commitment to the issue.
