✨ But what is the difference in orthopedic massage vs regular massage therapy?

✨ Orthopedic massage is a type of injury rehabilitation that focuses on the muscles and soft tissues surrounding joints.

✨ It involves assessment, movement, manipulation, myofascial work and often integrative therapies using multiple advanced modalities.

✨ The aim of orthopedic massage is to relieve pain while restoring balance and function to the muscle tissues and to create a fuller range of motion

✨ A large part of Ortho Massage is the actual assessment and observation, which often includes Ortho testing, manual manipulation and active assessment techniques based on the needs, injuries or issues of the client.

These techniques may often include:

✨ Active engagement – Used to reach deep, hard to access muscles by compressing muscles and stroking lengthwise in a perpendicular motion. It is especially helpful with whiplash or lumbar pain.

✨ Positional release – A gentle treatment safe for inflamed muscles and tissues that are too sensitive for other techniques. Soft tissues are manipulated into comfortable positions and held in the correct place for a minute or longer. This lengthens and softens tissues promoting pain relief and pain management.

✨ Nerve mobilization techniques – Also known as neurodynamics and neural mobilization, this method is used to locate strained nerves and sources of pain.

✨ Muscle energy technique – The therapist provides resistance while voluntarily contracting certain targeted muscles.
Especially helpful with lumbar pain and shoulder pain.

✨ Trigger point therapy – Uses intervals of pressure on trigger areas to release lactic acid and promote circulation.

✨ Myofascial release – Gentle pressure (or fascial scraping) applied to the body to stretch fascia tissues.

Indigo Body Massage and Orthopedics is a locally owned massage practice ran by Jessie Thompson, LMT, RMT with a focus in orthopedics, neuromuscular and myoskeletal alignment therapy, traditional Japanese acupressure and Shiatsu.

She began her massage practice in North Austin to “help others not to feel pain” by integrating orthopedic, advanced myofascial release methods and movement therapy.

Her passion and drive integrates with her mission to teach others that they have the power to heal themselves from within, just as she had through her therapy, acupressure, exercise, prayer, meditation, and self-development.

Having struggled with injuries, anxiety and depression herself, she made the life mission of her business practice to aide others in the process of healing themselves from within and to educate them on methods focused on helping them achieve their health goals, eliminate pain and inflammation from their lives so that they can continue to do the things they love doing, function at their optimal levels both physically and mentally and live a more healthy lifestyle.
