When every second counted, the NVA Heroes at Taylor Animal Hospital were the last hope for two wounded dogs.

After being turned away by two clinics in the middle of a life-threatening emergency, Blue and Chili Dog were running out of time and options.

The two dogs had gotten loose and found themselves in a dangerous situation in the Tennessee countryside. Both had been shot. Their family rushed them to two different animal hospitals, but neither were equipped to handle walk-in emergencies. Then they found Taylor Animal Hospital.

The team, led by Dr. Molly Shaw, didn't hesitate. After admitting both dogs, it was clear that surgery was needed to locate and remove the bullets. They immediately prepped the dogs for the operating room while a team member stayed with the family so they wouldn't have to wait alone.

While in surgery, the team discovered the full extent of the damage: Blue had a bullet lodged dangerously close to his carotid artery and jugular vein, requiring delicate removal, and another beneath the skin near his shoulder. Chili Dog suffered more extensive trauma, with significant muscle damage to her back leg.

Both surgeries were a success, and the dogs spent four days at Taylor Animal Hospital being monitored for infection and pain.

“Unfortunately, we encounter cases like this more often than we would like,” said Hospital Manager Sarah Kelsey Baker. “But I’m so grateful to be part of a team that never hesitates when a life is on the line."

Blue was discharged and is well on the road to recovery. Chili Dog's prognosis remains more guarded with muscle damage to her hindlimb that may require additional surgery or possibly an amputation, depending on how she progresses. But she made it home. They both did.

As a veterinarian and mom, Dr. Anna McBride loves that her daughter Adley has grown up alongside her at Longwood Animal Hospital in Texas. 💗

"Adley has been coming to the clinic with me for about six years now,” said Dr. McBride. “She has such a big heart for animals, and she truly understands and empathizes with both the animals and the clients.”

But it's the harder moments that have left the biggest impression. "We once had to put down a very young kitten with severe hydrocephalus. Adley was devastated and spent the next week creating her own illustrated 'procedure' to fix the condition, so we'd never have to lose another kitten like that."

For Dr. McBride, sharing those moments with her daughter makes the work even more meaningful. 💐

Arrow survived a house fire — and found a family with the NVA Heroes at Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital.

When a house fire tore through a New Jersey home, a young dog named Arrow barely made it out alive. He was found running around the property, terrified and badly injured.

Arrow was brought to Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital (OVH), where the team flushed his wound, applied silver sulfadiazine cream, and wrapped him in protective bandaging.

More than 50 days later, Arrow's wounds are about 70% healed, new skin has grown back, and every day he makes a lap around the hospital to say hello to each department. His forever home is out there waiting, and OVH plans to find him the perfect match.

"Arrow’s case brought the hospital to another level of unity," said Dr. Annemarie Alberta. "It grew our passion for veterinary medicine as a group to see his successful healing move forward."
