🆘 EMERGENCY FOOD NEEDED FOR 42 ‼️

It took us *EIGHT* stores to find water on Friday morning. Finding inexpensive bread and soup wasn’t much easier.
Queertopia has been renting cold weather hotels for 5 years at St John’s. We ALWAYS stock each room with soda, water, bologna, cheese, peanut butter, jelly, bread, soup, cookies, chips, oranges, and bananas on top of hot lunch and dinner.
This time no one made, ordered, or donated hot meals so we are OUT OF FOOD.

We have had a major increase in trans folks reaching out needing shelter- with NO immediate assistance available. This is the first time we have ever had a break like this.

🍽️ People need to eat. It’s that simple 🥤
🥞 If someone is asking for food- they are hungry.
🫘 The USA has both a food insecurity issue- with 42 million people on food stamps- AND a food waste issue- with 1/3 of all human produced food disposed.
🍕A common misconception amongst restaurants/ stores is that they can be sued for donating food. They are protected under the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act & The Food Donation Improvement Act.
🌮 QUEERTOPIA IS ASKING FOR HELP. A major resource we offer is assisting folks with their SNAP benefits- which they will not have through November.
🥡 Queertopia has NEVER been approved for a food related grant- despite dealing with constant food insecurity. So as always- we are asking our community to step in and share how you can.
🍔 Call/ email restaurants & stores asking about donations to 501(c)3s.
🥪 Donate items you have (peanut butter, jelly, tuna fish, mayo, bologna, cheese, bread, beverages). If we make 50 sandwiches a day with a snack & water- it will cost us $1464.

🛒 Offer to pay for a grocery. Most of our clients do not have cars and cannot make it to food pantries (which will be overrun anyway). Single mothers, elders, folks who don’t want to give their legal name over and over again.
🥫 Whatever it is- please do something. Bring food to an location. Ask Unhoused folks you’re familiar with if they’re good. Check on your people because a lot of folks are too embarrassed to say when they can’t afford basic necessities.
🆘 This month is going to be HARD.
PS- A LOT of the Unhoused community are bomb cooks/ chefs and can make a meal with you if you don’t want to cook alone. OR if anyone is hiring… Queertopia’s chefs have always come from the community.

🏠🩷 Long-term Volunteer Call: Volunteers with legal expertise and experience🩵🏠

As some of you may know, one of the areas where we focus our efforts is on providing support for the residents of CFV. This support includes, helping them create a renters union called the Dignified Neighbors Association, helping them avoid eviction and advocating for and alongside residents.

The response from CFV has not been positive, with retaliation being taken against residents and queertopia, for example, Dani has been barred from coming onto the premises despite being the case worker for many residents.

Due to the expanding number of community members we are supporting and the rising number of unjust evictions and cases of unsafe conditions at CFV we need to also expand our volunteer base! If you or someone you know have legal experience or experience, especially in the areas of tenant and housing law, please dm us to get involved!

☕️✨ Thank you to everyone who donated mugs and came out and painted with us! We were able to get over 60 mugs customized for our community. Special thanks to .atx for allowing us to use their space and their boxes!

☕️✨ This Saturday, Feb 8th, we will be partnering with for a mug painting event to paint mugs for our community members at .atx! While the event has maxed out for RSVPs there’s still a way to help out!

Give us your gently used mugs to customize for our community members! Either DM us to coordinate drop off or bring your mugs to .atx just before the event at 2pm! ☕️🩷

🩷✨ Thank you to everyone who was able to help out yesterday, whether it was by lending a hand with putting together packs, loading the bus or dropping off donations it was all appreciated! We were able to put together 41 toiletry packs for our community members and got a bunch of new clothes and household appliances to give out. Additionally we’d like to give a special thanks to for providing the space to hold our event and .atx for providing masks and an air purifier!

If you weren’t able to come this time around and still want to help, we still need 25 towel sets and 26 blankets to put in our housewarming kit packs. Dm us if you’d like to contribute to coordinate drop off! Be on the lookout for our next event and future volunteer calls! ✨🩵
