This is news from our West Austin office of Drive a Senior.
Food Pantry to End 8/27/2020
On August 27th, we will close our Emergency Food Pantry/Delivery program which was launched in March in response to the pandemic. We wanted to ensure that no senior in Austin went without access to healthy and safe food. It has been an incredible adventure and we are very proud to have served the Austin community in this capacity. Over 200 seniors have been served with 10,140 lbs of food including fresh meals, and 676 deliveries (as of 8/14/2020), we have made an incredible impact with the help of 128 food pantry volunteers. We could not have done it without our amazing and dedicated volunteers and community supporters!
As we wind down this service, we are replacing it with 2 new incredibly vital programs design to be permanent supportive services for senior food access. Below are brief descriptions of both programs. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Please read below and contact us if you are interested in continuing your volunteer work to help ensure no senior in Austin goes without food!

If you are looking for low contact volunteer opportunities, here it is! Anyone is welcome to join.
We have partnered with Hope Food Pantry and Micah 6 Food Pantry to be the transportation piece of their food distribution services. These 2 pantries are the first of many sites we hope to provide delivery services for so food can safely get from pantry to the doorsteps of seniors in need of food.
Hope deliveries will be made the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month between 3-3:30
Micah 6 deliveries are TDB.

INTRODUCING: Senior Sidekicks
HELP SENIORS GROCERY SHOP AND ORDER GROCERIES ONLINE!
Now that it is unsafe for seniors to visit grocery stores, we are giving them the support necessary to safely shop and eat with dignity.
This program will allow us to pair one volunteer with one client to assist them with grocery needs doing one of the following:
Shop on behalf of a senior and deliver their groceries to their front door
Order groceries over the phone with the senior for curbside pick-up and delivery by the volunteer, or to be delivered straight to their home
Assist with teaching seniors how to order groceries/goods online or over the phone. Many of our clients just need a little guidance to become self-sufficient in this new way of shopping
**We will also include prescription pick-up in a Sidekicks responsibilities when needed**
WE NEED YOU TO SIGN UP TO BECOME A SENIOR SIDEKICK.

RENT (Relief of Emergency Needs for Tenants) | AustinTexas.gov
This morning, the City of Austin announced the Relief of Emergency Needs for Tenants (RENT) Assistance Program to provide rent assistance for Austin renters financially impacted by COVID-19. The RENT Assistance Program, a partnership between the City’s Neighborhood Housing and Community Development Department (NHCD) and the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA), will open the application portal on August 19th at 8:00 a.m.CST and it will remain open through January 2021, or until funds are depleted.

We believe this merger will allow us to continue providing the highest level of Senior support and transportation services. We will maintain a strong relationship with the Faith community that has always supported Drive a Senior - North Central Austin and we hope to develop new community relationships, partnerships and services.
As a client, you will likely not notice a change in your service. You will continue to communicate with Charis or someone on our North Central team about scheduling rides.
As a volunteer, you will have more opportunities to pick up rides or help our Senior community in other ways.

What is Drive a Senior North Central Austin all about?
Drive a Senior - North Central Austin assists the elderly in maintaining their goal of independence and autonomy. We are primarily known for providing transportation to seniors who no longer drive. Our volunteer drivers generously give their time and resources to help seniors and there is no charge for our services. We also provide other services when possible to help seniors age in their own homes.
In our mobile society, many opportunities for family interaction have been reduced. Families many be scattered geographically and unavailable to assist their older relations. Some families now have two wage earners, greatly reducing the time available to assist other family members without jeopardizing their jobs. Many older adults may be reluctant to allow their loved-ones to assist them, fearing that they may be seen as unable to live on their own. Research shows that the elderly people age most successfully living in their own homes and communities, with access to their friends, neighbors and familiar surroundings.
Our services are provided at no charge to seniors 65 and older living within our service region. Funding is generously provided by area churches, individual donors, as well as through grants from foundations such as St. David’s Foundation. We welcome support from families and friends of those who use our services, and we appreciate financial assistance from other donors as well.
