“Life is like when you get on a plane. You get on board and that s**t takes off and it’s huge and
you don’t know what is going on and it has all this turbulence and you grab yourself from the
seat belt and you are scared, and you don’t know what’s going to happen. And the fu***ng
clouds make it hard for the plane. And you get at an altitude and it gets very smooth and
everything makes sense. That is life. Todo pasa. Everything is going to be ok.”

At the age of 13 I thought of a world without me
My mother, she cried, a lot.
My father shed a tear, but his machismo never let him mourn the death of his son
My sisters, they cried, but lived to see many more years
They fell in love, got married, had children of their own
My abuela sang happy birthday every time she thought of me.
At the age of 13 I wrote a poem that read,
“I saw myself sleep last night”
Told the world it was of my friend
Thought that maybe if I wrote a poem about someone
with problems that resonated with me, mine would go away.
At the age of 20 I think of a world without me again
My mother, she cries, a lot
My father sheds a tear, but his machismo never lets him mourn the death of his son
My sisters they cry, but live
Fall in love, get married, have children
My abuela still sings happy birthday every time she thinks of me
And I did not write a poem
I wrote my eulogy.
Said this world was not for me,
Asked God for forgiveness
Knew that what I was doing was a sin, but still asked for his blessing.
Cause depression, it comes at ya fast, ya know
Like the sound of vibration
You can see it
But you can hear it
And you can feel it
And you know it is happening
At the age of 21 I listen as my favorite poets says the words,
“I am happy
Like genuinely happy
And still the last time I felt like killing myself was 72 hours ago”
And so I thought of a world with her,
And I felt so alone.
So I made myself believe that maybe like I am loved.
At the age 20 salvation sounds a lot like my favorite song on repeat
Like my mothers amen
Like my abuela’s happy birthday
Like my nephews laugh
Like my lovers, I miss you
All of which are miles away
And my depression a bright gold saxophone waiting to be played
And I the magical hands that knows how to play it.
I turned 21 last week
Today, I wrote a poem for the first in two years
Today, I am alive
Today, I am smiling
Today, I get to hold my lover
Today, I get to pray with my mother
Today, I get to sing happy birthday with my grandmother
Today, I get to hug my nephew
And I know depression will be waiting for me like a husband in the alter
But today I live to see another day
And that stands for something.

Know That Feeling Alone Doesn’t Actually Mean You’re Alone, But It’s Just A Whole A lot Easier To Listen To The Voices In Your Head That Keep Telling You! That You’re Alone! You’re Alone, You’re Alone, You’re Alone! They Keep Telling You “Check Mate, Game Over!” Now You Feel Like Your Body’s Getting Heavier Than A Boulder! Your Positive Energy Is Being Drained And Sucked Out! As Those Chills Crawl Through Your Skin! Through Your Skin! Through Your Helpless And Sensitive Skin! Now You’re Picking Your Favorite Kind Of Poison And Letting It All In! I Know That Sometimes It Feels Like The Walls Are Closing In On You! Like You’re Trapped In Some Elevator Claustrophobic To The World! I Know It Feels A Whole A lot Easier To Pop Those Prescription Pills! I Know It Feels Easier To Let Them Keep Going Into Your Body Than Let Those Words “Please, I Need Your Help” Come Out Of Your Mouth! Because You Fear That If You Say Them! You’ll Hear The Words “They’re Weak! Might As Well End It, Because They’re Not Cut Out For This World!” You’ll Fear That You’ll Be Staring At A Faceless Expression! With Cold Eyes Resembling A Doll, And No Voice! That Won’t Say “My Friend, Please Don’t Do This! You Have A lot To Live For! I Love You! They Love You! We’ll Miss You! This World Will Never Be The Same Without You! You’ll Load Up A Gun! You’ll Pull Out A Knife! Any Hurtful Object Those Voices Will Tell To End Your Life!
