Coping strategies and mental health support are essential for seniors with psoriasis. Here are some coping strategies and mental health considerations for seniors living with psoriasis:
1. Education and Awareness: Encourage seniors to learn more about psoriasis to better understand their condition. Provide educational materials, reliable online resources, or recommend support groups where they can connect with others facing
similar challenges.
2. Open Communication: Encourage seniors to talk openly about their feelings and experiences with psoriasis. Sharing their concerns, frustrations, and emotions can alleviate stress and promote emotional well-being.
3. Stress Management: Stress can trigger or worsen psoriasis symptoms. Encourage them to engage in activities they enjoy, such as reading, listening to music, practicing deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle exercises like yoga or tai chi.
4. Supportive Networks: Encourage seniors to seek support from their social circles, whether it’s through friends, family, or support groups to provide support and empathy.

Lifestyle factors and self-care practices play a crucial role in managing psoriasis for seniors. Here are some lifestyle recommendations and self-care strategies specifically tailored for seniors living with psoriasis:
1. Maintain a Healthy Diet: Encourage seniors to adopt a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Encourage them to identify and minimize any dietary triggers that may aggravate
their psoriasis.
2. Stay Hydrated: Drinking an adequate amount of water is important for maintaining healthy skin and overall well-being.
3. Gentle Skincare: Help seniors establish a gentle skincare routine to keep their skin moisturized and minimize irritation. Recommend fragrance-free, hypoallergenic skincare products, and discourage the use of harsh soaps or hot water that can strip the skin’s natural oils.
4. Sun Protection: Advise seniors to protect their skin from excessive sun exposure, as sunburn can trigger or worsen psoriasis symptoms. Encourage them to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, wear protective clothing, and seek shade when spending time outdoors.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the skin, although it can also have systemic effects. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, causing rapid and excessive skin cell growth. This results in the formation of thick, red, scaly patches or plaques on the skin. The exact cause of psoriasis is still not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune system factors. Psoriasis can develop at any age, but it most commonly appears between the ages of 15 and 35.

As we age, feelings of isolation can creep in, but you’re not alone. In fact, 50% of individuals aged over 60 are at risk of social isolation. This month, let’s shed light on the mental health of our elderly population, particularly among minority groups who may face additional barriers to access care.
Always Best Care is also here to help. We encourage maintaining relationships through regular contact with loved ones, and planning get-togethers. Open communication about feelings of loneliness is vital. Building new connections is equally important. Joining community groups, volunteering, and learning new skills can foster a sense of community. For our elderly minority population, these activities can also help bridge cultural gaps and improve mental health.

Nothing means more than the memories we make and the love that we share. Happy Gorgeous Grandma Day! 👵👩🦳💗

Seniors are particularly vulnerable during heatwaves. Seek medical care immediately if you have, or someone you know has, symptoms of heat-related illness like muscle cramps, headaches, nausea or vomiting.

Mental health issues are universal, affecting many regardless of age, race, or social status. Yet, stigmas often hinder us from seeking help, especially among minority elderly populations. In fact, up to 50% of people with common mental disorders do not use health services according to a study conducted by BMC Psychiatry.

Elder abuse is something that we take very seriously. It’s important to remember that anyone can help at some level. If you suspect abuse, call the police or 911 immediately if someone you know is in immediate, life-threatening danger. Relay your concerns to the local Adult Protective Services (APS). Here is a map with a listing of APS across the United States: https://ncea.acl.gov/Resources/State.aspx

How To Protect Your Skin in Extreme Heat
Being exposed to direct sunlight without skin protection can increase the risk of cancer. Whenever you expect to spend time outdoors, apply sunblock generously to avoid sunburns and skin damage. The sun is at its harshest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., but seniors should be careful at all hours. Wearing sunglasses to protect eyes is essential too, as UV rays can be just as harmful to your eyes as your skin.

Today begins Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Week recognizing the invaluable work of nursing assistants in the senior care industry.

Safety for seniors is critical in the summer. Older adults are more vulnerable to heat and dehydration, so they often must take extra precautions to be safe during heatwaves or extreme humidity. Stay hydrated, protect them from the sun’s UV rays, and know the signs of heat related illnesses. Summer can be an excellent time of year for seniors as long as they commit to a
safety plan.

One of the best summer safety tips for seniors is to be in frequent contact with friends or family. If you have an aging loved one, you should check up on them regularly throughout the summer. Make sure their home is cool enough to be comfortable and encourage them to drink plenty of water and limit their exposure to direct sunlight. During the intense heat waves, your senior loved one should have a visitor at least once per day to ensure that they’re safe and healthy.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million. 💔
