Looking to get a few plants in the ground before the summer heat takes hold? 🌹

Check-out Central Austin’s for some great ideas. They have an unbeatable selection and friendly staff. Pro tip: ask for Sam.

One of my favorite ways to add color to any garden is with Knock Out Roses. They make a colorful and classic addition to any yard, and they absolutely thrive in the Texas summer sun.

Here's what you need to know: These beautiful blooms stay tight and compact, growing only 18 inches tall and wide. Petite Knock Out Roses are perfect for potting or planting straight into the ground. All day sun is no match for these roses! They do best in direct light and are perfect for hot, sunny areas.

I’m sure you’ve seen the rose bushes popping off around town this week- who else has rose envy? Let’s talk about how to grow ‘em like a pro!

LIGHT ☀️
Full sun all the way! It takes a lot of energy to produce such prolific blooms, so all day sun is key to maximize flower production. A part day of sun means you will likely end up with a partly blooming bush.

WATER 💧
Soak the entire root system throughly each and every time that you water- think “deeply and infrequently.” Right now you will probably need to water about once a week, but in the heat of the summer, it’ll be closer to every other day. Remember - aim at the base of the plant when you water (near the roots,) do NOT aim for the leaves and flowers! Roses are prone to mildew, so you don’t want the shrub itself to stay too wet for too long.

FERTILIZER 🌹
Just like I said above in the light section, it takes a LOT of energy - and nutrients - to produce rose blooms. During the growing season, give your bushes a good feeding once a month. This ensures they have the nutrients they need to keep blooming all summer long! I recommend rose glo for any plant with a fruit or a bloom, roses included.

Pictured Rose Varieties:
1. Iceberg
2. Double Red Knockout
3. Belinda’s Blush
4. Brick House Red

02/02/2022

We will be closed on Thursday, February 3rd, due to inclement weather.

Make sure to grab any plants that are still outside and bring them in if you can- if not, cover with a frost cloth or old linen sheet if you don’t have a FC available (sadly we are out of stock).

Please stay safe and warm until we can see you again. ❄️

Happy Black History Month! Today I want to share the inspirational story of a woman named Hattie Carthan, aka “The Tree Lady of Brooklyn.”

“In the 1960s and 1970s, New York City faced a sharp economic decline and white flight. Buildings were abandoned or burned down, particularly in the city’s lower-income neighborhoods. Communities faced mass disinvestment — and what was left was urban decay.

It was around this time that Hattie Carthan, a 64-year-old woman living in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, began a grassroots effort to transform that urban decay into green space. What started with four newly planted trees in her neighborhood turned into 1,500.

Along with guerrilla gardening efforts popularized by the “seed bombs” of Lower East Side gardener Liz Christy, Hattie’s urban environmental movement paved the way for the city’s support for community gardens.

Today, around 500 community gardens line streets across New York City. But the history of how we got them — through the radical work of people like Hattie and Liz — is often overlooked.”
-Ranjani Chakraborty & Melissa Hirsch (article linked below)

Hattie Carthan taught us that gardening is healing, for the individual and the community alike. Today, and for the rest of this month, let us remember her invaluable work and do our best to replicate her compassion, selflessness, and determination in our own personal lives.

Our 12th & final Christmas gift idea: stationary & gift certificates! These are great for last minute gifts for friends and family.

I love giving a few unused Flat Flower cards when I’m not sure what to gift someone. They are blank on the inside so the recipient can personalize them with any message for any occasion!

Gift certificates are another quick & easy idea that anyone will appreciate. I mean c’mon, who doesn’t want the gift of guilt-free plant shopping?? 🤩

If we don’t see you in the next week or so, Happy Holidays from the Shoal Creek crew!!! We are so appreciative of our customers- you all brighten each and every day for us🥰

(PS: this is my last day in the office before I take a little time off for some highly anticipated family time! You might start to wonder where our posts have gone, but no need to worry… Once I get back the first week of January, we’ll be gearing up for the springtime & I’ll have lots more content for you all to enjoy. Until then, be safe & merry 💕)
