On Peace Officers Memorial Day, we honor the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives protecting our communities.

Yesterday was the last day of our second session at the State House. I had the pleasure of reconnecting with someone very special — Royena Heath, my 1st and 2nd-grade teacher from South Bristol.

We spent time walking down memory lane, reminiscing about classmates and catching up on where life has taken so many of us. She remembered everything.

This August, Royena turns 90 — and she is still showing up, still advocating, still making a difference through her work with AARP. An inspiration doesn't even begin to cover it.

And I'll never forget what she wrote on my report card, quarter after quarter: "Wayne is a joy to have in my class!"
