Maine EMS professionals are often the first to arrive in moments of crisis.

This , we extend our gratitude for their commitment to service and keep in our hearts the first responders affected by the tragic explosion at Robbins Lumber Mill.

Thank you for everything you do to keep us safe.

On Peace Officers Memorial Day, we honor the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives protecting our communities.

Every name on the memorial wall in Augusta represents a family forever changed by loss. This year, we are keeping the loved ones and fellow colleagues of Joshua Tibbetts in our hearts.

When my old trivia nemesis (who left Waterville for a new adventure Down East) called to say he was bringing his new class from Calais upta Augusta for a tour of the state house, I couldn’t resist going by to say hello!

Here’s a group of really great kids from down Maine, and they sure are lucky to have Earl Watts as their teacher!

I was able to wow the kids be telling them I know their state Rep Artie Mingo personally (also the former Mayor of Calais!) and that we worked well together on the Housing & Economic Development Committee.

Thanks to Krysta West, Ellen Parent, the Maine Forest Products Council & all the kind folk at Sappi — I had an incredible tour of Sappi a couple days ago. I grew up around the corner from the factory, and had never seen it or been on site before. It’s an imposing place!

Sappi provides 830+ on site jobs of all kinds (with truly unheard of benefits and retirement) for people who live in a lot of different parts of Maine, including Waterville.

Sappi also supports several trades in Maine along with 6000 secondary market jobs — meaning there are 6000 people a year that work in one way or another for Sappi’s Somerset plant and see economic benefit from the place. I saw Cianbro vehicles on site, as well as several other specialty trades people both in and outside the plant — it truly is an impressive economic ecosystem.

I had gone on a Professional Logging Contractors tour last fall, and it was really neat to see some of the guys from that organization, who invest in their family businesses and make a living selectively cutting our forests, drive in to the lumber yard and unload their trucks.

And I was like an excited toddler pointing to all the big equipment and marveling at the mix of human activity and automation that eventually turns trees into paper.

The paper production process sure was neat, but also learning about Sappi’s upgrades to their paper machines and diversification of fuel sources and biomass integration was truly impressive.. I could have spent all day asking questions.

I was so impressed by all the eco-friendly, plastic alternative packaging samples I saw, and the wood fiber products used to make various products, including the Sappi branded dish towels, socks, and shirt I left with that day.

I spent most of my formative years right around the corner from the place, and I never knew what neat things I would witness there one day.

It was pretty cool.

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week!

I am so grateful for the hard work that Maine teachers do each and every day for our students.

This year, I’m especially proud that the Legislature took steps to recognize that work by raising teacher pay, which has been long overdue.

Happy !

Apprenticeships can play a vital role in strengthening Maine’s workforce. In the Legislature, we’ve made it a priority to expand these opportunities for students and workers.

If you’re looking for a career change or if you’re an employer looking to hire, check out some of the job fairs going on across the state this week: www.apprenticeship.gov/national-apprenticeship-week.
