via @streethymns - After praying to “god” and singing songs of worship and liberation all while invoking constitutional “rights”, many whites in Augusta Georgia took to the streets in 1970 to protest integration. For years black students nationwide were zoned away from nearby white schools and forced to walk long distances or ride buses across town to attend segregated, underfunded Black schools, even when a closer school sat just blocks from home. Many whites were outraged following federal desegregation orders after Brown v. Board of Education, officials introduced a “1 mile or less” rule. If a Black student lived within one mile of a previously all-white school, they could attend that closer school instead of being sent miles away. The backlash was immediate. White parents organized protests and boycotts. Some withdrew their children from public schools altogether. Private academies saw enrollment surge. Public meetings turned heated. What was described as protecting “neighborhood schools” was, at its core, resistance to integration and equal access. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory #happyblackhistorymonth #fyp #Georgia

Although we are not an official Uber, we do provide a similar service. Just a reminder though, our rides are only going to one destination and often cost a great deal more. Make smart decisions to avoid using our ‘Uber’. Stay safe, and make great decisions!

We’re launching the Support an Artist Initiative to help local artists affected by lost supplies and missed opportunities. You can make a donation or purchase art supplies through our Amazon Gift Registry, and we’ll distribute these items free of charge to artists in need!

Artists will be able to submit a quick request to confirm eligibility (link here: https://augustaarts.info/artist-supply-program ), and we’ll provide supplies as they come in. This initiative runs through December 31st, with any supply surplus donated to the Jessye Norman School of the Arts.

💙 Monetary donations will be added to an Artist Emergency Relief Fund for future needs.
