My pick from 2 days old
When APHA trainer and breeder Teresa Pelton took me to see the latest batch of foals in her pasture in the winter of 2016, little did I know that I would be visiting with my next big adventure. At two days old this little c**t paid more attention to the visitors (my kids and I) than he did to his momma. He was all about the love, attention and butt scratches that these two legged animals were giving him and he wanted more.
When I came out to ride my horse that was in training with Teresa, I would always swing by the broodmare pasture to take a look at the babies and see how they were doing. Who could resist right? Spring is the best time of year to see the beauty of four legged babies running around and to see what their natural talent and breeding would soon reveal. Well Monkey stood out like a sore thumb amongst the other long legged willowy hunter types. He was twice the size of all the other babies in width and height. He was built like a Mac truck and would have definitely been a contender for weanling halter titles if the classes were like they were back in the day when the industry was booming. Teresa always said - “he looks like he could pull a steer down as a rope horse”.
This c**t was not only tall but muscled up with great confirmation. But his beauty wasn't only in his appearance and mesmerizing flaxen mane and tail. When he would run and play in the pasture with the babies, his legs were so slow and flat that it was like he was loping on air - Completely effortless.
As the year progressed, I’d stop by during my visits to Florida on occasion as the time would allow as we were busy with a full slate of shows. During one visit, I took my husband Randy Warthen by and said, “ You’ve got to see this baby!” As a horse trainer and judge, my husband has spent a lifetime picking out some of the greatest horses for his clients and of course myself. I have always admired his ability to pick a great champion and see their potential. He can see a great one amidst mud, long hair, snowy and muddy pastures, no matter the conditions he sees the baby in. Believe me, we’ve loaded up a few horses that looked like fur ball ponies that I said - “are you sure this is what we need” - and he would say, “Trust me - there’s a great hose in there under all that hair and dirt. “ And of course, he was always right.
