“The biggest thing that happens when you go through pain, and trauma and abuse is the feeling that no one else will understand, and no one else will see it from where you’re coming from. That’s the reason why I love art, and why I want to stay engaged with it, because I do believe that art curates hope and makes for stronger communities.”

“We have to stop trying to appeal to people who don’t care about us. We have to stop trying to assimilate. We have to stop looking at them and saying, “See, now I’m worthy”. I really like the discussion around respectability politics, I don’t have to get an oppressor’s respect, they’re an oppressor.”

“You end up spending a lot of intimate time with the people you do poems with in your city, really getting to know them. You are listening to each other’s life stories. You hear them explain why they wrote that, or what was going through their mind, or what their triggers are. From being on poetry teams, or being in community with some of those people, you learn so much about them, their trauma, what they need to be supported, their stories.”

Thinking about our Black Qu**rs Femmes event at back in February when blessed us with an amazing feature. Even though our community still exists, we really miss celebrating and seeing you all face to face! For those of us with capacity, there are still ways we can support each other despite our physical distance.

Please note this space is being created with the intention of centering and celebrating Black People - POC and White allies are welcome to attend and support but please be respectful of the space and it's intention. Ways to support: by them a drink, let them ahead of you in line, give them some gas, offer them a ride, ask for their Venmo, listen more and talk less, be intentional
about why you are here. Thank you 💕
This event is taking place on the stolen ancestral land of the Duwamish tribe, we honor with gratitude the land itself and its indigenous people.

The only entrance to the event is down a staircase, which unfortunately makes it inaccessible to folks who cannot use stairs. A couple of the performances
will include music and poetry.
At this time we are unable to provide CART
or interpretation services
for hard of hearing or deaf individuals.
In the future we hope to host
events in spaces that are more accessible,
as we believe people’s experience of art
should not be limited by a space’s inability
to accommodate all bodies.
As of now, we as a group are operating with
little financial resource and planning capacity.
