It's women's month! I'm shouting out a few amazing women of Gospel music....Let's start with ALBERTINA WALKER –
Albertina Walker was one of the most dynamic, trailblazing women in the Gospel industry. Known as the “Queen of Gospel.” Albertina was born in Chicago in 1929 and lived there until she passed in 2010.
In 1951, Albertina founded The Caravans, a female gospel group, consisting of four to six female members who lived up to their name by traveling the country extensively. The group alternated members over the course of their 25-year history. As well, various pianists for the group were often male, the most famous of them was James Cleveland, who Albertina “discovered” and gave him his first opportunity to record in 1955.
Due to Albertina’s unselfish promotion of other talents, several famous gospel artists launched from the Caravans, included Bessie Griffin, Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, and Cassietta George.
Albertina recorded over 60 albums in her career which spanned over 60 years. Her most successful recordings were “Please Be Patient With Me” and “I Can Go to God in Prayer.” Note: Sim Wilson Jr. wrote "Please Be Patient with Me" and Calvin Bridges wrote “I Can Go to God in Prayer”
