What type of wood do I use for door hangers? Our local, big box hardware stores are Lowes and Home Depot. While both stores offer similar products, some are better than others. For door hangers, I prefer the 1/2x4x8 sanded plywood from Lowes. The grain in the wood is different than that purchased at Home Depot. But I have found that the quality of the wood at Lowes is much better. When cutting the sanded plywood from Lowes with an up spiral router bit, I get very little splintering. When removing stencil, the wood doesn't pull up with the stencil. In purchasing the 1/2x4x8 wood from Home Depot, I have found that the wood edges splinter A LOT! When pulling up the stencil after painting, splinters of the wood seem to pull off with the stencil. I prep my wood by sanding with 300 grit sand paper and dusting with a dry paint brush.
