Because of you, a young widow who felt her world had ended found the strength to begin again. Your belief in our mission has been a powerful force for healing, and for that, we are incredibly grateful. As someone who has walked this path, I know firsthand the impact of your support.
Now, we are called to bring that same healing focus to our unhoused neighbors who face a critical gap in our healthcare system.

When a person without a home is discharged from the hospital, where do they go to recover? Too often, the answer is back to the streets. This is not just a gap in care; it’s a cycle of crisis.
We are launching a pilot recuperative care program to break this cycle. Think of it as a short-term healing home—a place where someone recently released from the hospital can rest, manage their medications, and regain their strength. This vital care can prevent their health from deteriorating and reduce hospital readmissions.

We are starting with one person at a time, and we need your help to welcome our first neighbor home to heal. Will you join us?

Offer to Take the Kids Out

If your friend is caring for kids or grandkids, find an opportunity to take them out for the day or the weekend. A number of my friends did just that, and it gave my kids a fun time away from home while providing me with some much-needed time alone. My kids were young at the time so it enabled me to run errands, grieve or take a nice hot bath without distractions.

To make it easy for your friend to accept your offer, don’t make it sound like you’re going out of your way to make the invitation. It’s not that she would be ungrateful, but widows can be reluctant to accept help if they feel like they’re being a burden on others.

It’s easier to say yes to something like “We’re planning to go rollerskating and wondered if the kids would like to come along” rather than “Let us take the kids off your hands for the weekend, you really need to relax.”

When you lose a spouse, that often means losing a partner to simply talk with. As you get acclimated to your new normal, try connecting with yourself, your emotions, wholistically through painting. It's a deeply therapeutic way to help you move through your grief. Expressing yourself to others through words can sometimes be a challenge. Writing in a diary allows us to work through our feelings honestly, especially when we know no one else will be reading our thoughts. Art is an alternative type of diary. Focus on getting in tune with how you feel and putting it into art, don’t let your level of skill deter you from the practice. This Connection Tuesday we're featuring Masterpiece Mixers, an art studio in Snellville, GA.

To book a session for yourself or a group of friends, connect with Masterpiece Mixers at www.masterpiecemixerssnellville.com or give them a call at (706) 362-0919.

Remember His Important Dates

At a certain point, everyone else’s life does go on including your widower friend. We don’t live in bubbles and we can’t stop time, but remember that your friend is still grieving. Pain doesn’t have an expiration date, and the grieving process is different for everyone.

Special dates like birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and the date of a spouse’s death can be especially difficult. In the first few years, make a note of these dates in your calendar and when the day arrives, reach out to your friend with a card, call or text. If you have the time you can even help them plan a small private memorial where attendees can say a few words, then you release Chinese lanterns or balloons in their spouse's honor. That’s a meaningful way to let him know you haven’t forgotten and that you’re thinking about him.
