Journey to RYSE returns, and for this session, we’re sitting down with Tamika Miller—an award-winning film and television director whose latest project, UNDERCARD, is making serious waves.

Starring Wanda Sykes in her first dramatic role, UNDERCARD premiered to critical acclaim—taking home the Audience Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival and Best Independent Film at the St. Louis International Film Festival—before its nationwide release.

And that’s just the beginning.

Tamika’s directing credits span both film and major network television, including Quantum Leap (NBC), The Equalizer (CBS), and Station 19 (ABC/Shondaland).

Bringing a unique, but much-needed project like RYSE Creative Village to fruition requires a significant collaborative effort. When completed, it will not only spur economic development, but also economic empowerment within the Venetian Hills and surrounding Southwest Atlanta community. It will create jobs, support individuals participating in the creator economy, and connect community members to real opportunities.
 
We are thankful to have an ally in Develop Fulton, who has demonstrated their commitment to our vision and mission, not only in words, but more importantly in actions. 🙌

Someone recently told us: “We’ve been waiting on you.”

That landed. Because we’ve been moving behind the scenes — but our updates went quiet, as we buried ourselves digging into the work.

Along the way, we've been dealing with some good, some bad, and some ugly, and it's long past time we shared a bit with our TRYBE.

The Good:

✅ Secured some additional funding for the project from the Fulton County Development Authority.
✅ We are solidifying a strategic alliance with Georgia Tech's Creative Quarter.
✅ Georgia Power selected our site for the installation of EV charging stations as part of their 'Make Ready' program.
✅  We are semi-finalists in the 2025 Black Ambition Prize found by Pharrell Williams. We are now part of the Black Ambition family.

The Bad:

🚧 We hit construction delays when our general contractor walked off the job in the middle of construction. Raise your hand if you've ever dealt with a bad contractor. 🤚🏾

The Ugly:

🤬This M**O stole some of our material we paid for when he abandoned the site.

Back to the Good:

As we know, one monkey doesn't stop the show. We are back in motion. We bid the project back out to a number of highly recommended contractors and are resetting our sights on a Q1 2026 Phase 1 opening — and we are double down on getting everything back in action. 🕺🏾

There is an important 'why' behind our desire to bring RYSE Creative Village to life. People like are behind that 'why'. EmmoLei Sankofa is an artist and composer who grew up right in South Fulton. She is a Creative Professional who is serious about her craft.
She has provided the original score for notable movies and shows on networks that include Hulu, Starz, Disney+, among many other platforms, and she has even been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for her outstanding work. RYSE Creative Village is for people like Emmolei. A place where creativity builds community. A place with the tools for your imagination to run wild. A place to build your dreams. Thankful to have dope people like her as part of our TRYBE. 🔥👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🖤
