GOTT BEFOHLEN
I was devastated to learn this morning that one of our oldest friends Clark Peddicord had succumbed to cancer and is now with the Lord. Jan and I first got to know Clark and Ann as students in seminary. They were one of three student couples with Campus Crusade for Christ who were preparing for ministry in Europe. They took us under their wing and modeled for us as newlyweds what a Christian marriage and partnership looks like. They became two of the most influential persons in our lives, a source of godly wisdom and encouragement. Clark became the National Director of Campus Crusade in Germany. We moved to Europe for graduate studies in England and Germany, where we sometimes met together. When I unexpectedly failed my doctoral exams in theology at the University of Munich, it was Clark who wisely advised me not to make any sudden decisions, but to put some emotional distance between that event and us before determining our future course. As a result, I determined to take the exams again, a year later, and passed them easily. That year of intense study laid the foundations for what eventually became my Systematic Philosophical Theology. Clark was a rare person who combined an intellectually engaged faith with a heart for missions. While directing Crusade, he took a doctorate in philosophy under the esteemed philosopher of science Bernulf Kanitscheider at the University of Erlangen. When I began my work at the University of Louvain on divine eternity, Clark introduced me to Kanitscheider, and I was able to put many of my questions about relativity theory to him. (Typical of German scholarship Kanitscheider had copies of all of Einstein’s early papers on relativity, which he shared with me.) Clark and Ann lived in Germany for 50 years engaged in Christian ministry. Their impact on us was truly life-changing, for which we shall always be grateful.

Today we celebrated our Engagement Anniversary with a delicious lunch at Capital Grill!
BRRR!
Saturday the power went out in our neighborhood at about 5:00pm, while the temperatures plunged into the teens. Jan put away the steak she had planned to cook, and we got by on cottage cheese and pork rinds for supper. We used flashlights and candles until bedtime. Then I dug out the long underwear, but an extra comforter on the bed, and covered my head to stay warm. It was a long night. At 4:30am the lamps came on with a blaze of light! This brief outage reminded me of how folks must have lived in the days before central heating!

SEEING THINGS CLEARLY
I just learned that Perry Binder, the brilliant surgeon who gave me corneal transplants in both eyes in the early 1990s, thereby saving my eyesight and academic career, has passed away https://isrs.org/perry-s-binder-md-pioneer-teacher-friend/. I was awake during the entire surgery, during which Dr. Binder chatted casually with a colleague about his tennis game! Optometrists examining my eyes in subsequent years have marveled at the masterful job he did. "It should be in a book!" the last one said. I'm so grateful to Dr. Binder (not to mention the two donors!) for the gift of sight!
Perry S. Binder, MD – Pioneer, Teacher, Friend - International Society of Refractive Surgery Perry Scott Binder, born on September 9, 1942, passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 83. He was a resident of San Diego, California. Dr. Perry S. Binder, MS, MD, was one of those rare people who shaped both a field and the people in it. From the early days of radial […]

REST IN PEACE, ANGEL
Jan and I reluctantly took our beloved cat Angel to the vet to be euthanized yesterday. He had become blind and deaf and went about the house moaning. We felt that it would be cruel to leave him alone and abandoned, unable to find us and be comforted, while we went off to Boston for a week of conferences. I buried him in the garden next to his sister and marked the spot with a Helleborus plant which will bloom with beautiful white flowers in the spring. R.I.P.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, USA!
Here in the United States we are beginning a year-long celebration of the 250th anniversary of our nation. The other nations of the world can be glad, indeed, that today the world’s most powerful superpower is a nation that is a democratic republic deeply influenced by Christianity and committed to the values enunciated in the Bill of Rights. Can you imagine the nightmare if it were instead China or the former Soviet Union?

Jan and I just returned from Talbot School of Theology, where I delivered six lectures to a class of students and spoke at a conference being held on campus. My lectures were extracted from my "Excursus on Natural Theology" of my forthcoming vol. IIb of my Systematic Philosophical Theology. I presented updated reflections on the cosmological argument from contingency, the kalām cosmological argument, the argument from the applicability of mathematics, the teleological argument from fine-tuning of the universe, the moral argument from objective moral values and duties, and the ontological argument for a maximally great being. The students were wonderful and our conversations scintillating!
