This Juneteenth, Trans Joy would like to highlight a Black and Trans activist, Frances Thompson. Thank you Frances, for your difficult and impactful work, and to all the Black Trans activists who have gone unnamed in history. Thompson was born around1840 into slavery. The family that claimed to own her recognized her gender identity and gave her feminine clothes to match. Frances was liberated from slavery when most of the family that claimed to own her died in the Civil War. She then settled in Memphis, TN.

From May 1st through May 3rd of 1866, a white mob viciously attacked Black residents. Countless Black Memphis residents were murdered, injured, robbed, or assaulted. Afterward, Frances was one of five Black women to testify before Congress regarding the atrocities committed. Frances returned to Memphis and continued her advocacy until she was outed approximately a decade later. She was sentenced to forced labor on a men’s chain gang, and died shortly after her release. Likely due to her disability and health issues caused by the brutal work conditions.

We are looking for trans youth (11-18 years old) who are interested in participating in this intergenerational celebration of trans lives: past, present, and future. This project will take place over the summer and will be displayed in Poncey Highland, Atlanta, at The Church at Ponce and Highland for this year's TDOR. This project will have digital and physical art elements. We are looking for a range of skills and interests, including physical art, digital art, and electronics.
