What if it's about learning how to build on what you're already doing instead?

What if the behaviors that look defiant are actually signs of a nervous system under constant threat?
In this episode, Rabbi Shoshana unpacks PDA, also known as Pathological Demand Avoidance or Pervasive Drive for Autonomy, and explains how nervous system sensitivity, autonomy, and co-regulation shape behavior in neurodivergent kids. She explores why traditional approaches often fail, how modern life intensifies dysregulation, and what it means to truly trust a child rather than assume oppositional intent.
Get ready to rethink “difficult behavior,” understand what may really be happening beneath the surface, and walk away with a more compassionate, nervous-system-informed way to support your family.

When our kids face consequences, we want them to learn accountability. But constantly playing the enforcer just creates friction.
What if you let your family routines and agreements do the heavy lifting instead? When you have clear structures in place, the system becomes the “bad guy” so you don’t have to be.
That frees you up to stay on your child’s team. To offer genuine empathy when they make a mistake. To say, “I’m so sorry that happened. How can we work through this together?”
Kids build resilience when they face consequences side by side with a supportive parent, not through lectures.
Let your systems handle the rules so you can stay the warm, guiding presence your child needs.
How are you letting structure do the work in your home? Share below!

Are you stuck in director mode? Or have you skipped straight to hands-off and wondered why it backfired?
There are 4 phases every parent moves through as they gradually transfer independence to their child, and most of us spend far more time than we realize cycling between just two of them.
The goal isn’t to let go all at once. It’s to pass the baton little by little, moving from Director to Collaborator to Supporter to Champion at a pace that truly works for your child.
This is one of the keystone concepts we teach inside Sanity School®, because when you understand where you are in this process, everything becomes a little clearer and a lot less overwhelming.
