According to Parentkind’s National Parent Survey 2026, 85% of parents want to be more involved in their child’s school, while the proportion of parents who say they feel involved in their child’s education has fallen from 80% in 2023 to 59% in 2026.

On September 3, 2026, the American Psychological Association released an expert report examining how children and adolescents ages 5–18 learn with educational technology—from educational apps and digital learning platforms to intelligent tutoring systems and generative AI.

Its central idea is wonderfully simple:

Engagement is not the same as learning.

Imagine a student spends 40 minutes inside an educational application. They click frequently, answer questions, collect rewards and complete activities.

From a product perspective, the metrics can look fantastic:

Time spent ↑ → Interaction ↑ → Completion ↑ → Engagement ↑

But none of those automatically proves that learning happened.

The stronger test comes after the technology disappears.

Can the student remember the concept? Solve a similar problem independently? Apply that knowledge in another situation?

APA cautions against treating time spent, enjoyment, participation and completion as evidence of learning. What ultimately matters is not simply how successfully students engage with educational technology, but what they are able to learn, retain and apply.
