Target Leadership
Author and Nationally Renowned Motivational Leadership Speaker Jeff "Odie" Espenship. It's the little things! Be accountable, not held accountable.
Safety Leadership Speaker and founder of Target Leadership Jeff "Odie" Espenship drives behaviors in the workplace to embrace a ZERO accident culture. How employees behave when no one is looking over their shoulder defines the job culture. There is a difference.

Every single business requires each employee to juggle 3 priorities to be successful:
• SAFETY: avoid injuries and accidents
• QUALITY: deliver excellent results
• PRODUCTIVITY: get more done in less time
How well we juggle these 3 balls will come as a byproduct of personal, value based leadership.
Reflect inward. Own it. Create the right Job Culture.
Pay attention to the size of the shadow you cast when working, it’s bigger than you think. You influence the work behaviors of those around you more than you may realize.
What’s going to be your legacy? 🫵🏼🙏🏼👊🏼

Jeff "Odie" Espenship's story about his life's experience is, without a doubt, one of the most captivating presentations out there. Odie was the keynote speaker for our annual EHS conference in Kansas City where he took our leadership team on a full range emotional journey of adventure, triumph, heartbreak, laughter, and self-reflection. This was everything we needed to get our leaders immersed into how our words and actions influence and inspire the targeted behaviors of our valued team members, in effort to reduce risk and grow a strong safety and environmental culture. Following the presentation, we received extremely positive feedback from our team. I can't recommend Odie enough…his message hits hard and lasts!

Hi Odie,
I truly enjoyed your message at DFAs EHS Conference in Kansas City. I have been talking about it ever since. I was asked to give a synopsis of the conference to our leadership team this morning. While there was allot of good content at the conference, I spent the majority of time talking about your keynote message and the opportunities for leadership to make a dramatic impact on behavior. Needless to say, you captured my attention from the start.
I placed an order this morning for two copies of the book and would treasure having them personalized with some words of encouragement from your years of wisdom and leadership experience which you shared with us so dynamically in your keynote message.
It was truly an honor and a privilege to hear your message and meet you in person….
You are an amazing, gifted and talented human being and I am thankful our paths crossed. We are all indebted for your service and sacrifice for our nation.

A dash cam video from a 911 caller recently captured a jaw-dropping event: an 8-year-old girl confidently, yet erratically, drove her mom’s car 13 miles to Target for a shopping trip. Police arrived at the store, prompting an officer to later jokingly post on their page:
“Not sure what she bought, or if she was even able to use her Target app to save 5%. We did let her finish her Frappuccino. We’re not mean." 🫶🏼
As you can imagine, reactions to this event varied. Many judged the parents. Some cast aspersions on the child. Lots of reactions were comical. But most were thankful no one was injured. For me, it was a moment to pause and reflect. This story offers us simple insight into human behavior, no matter the age.
**Confident Incompetence**
Where and how did this 8-year-old get her confident (incompetence) to pull off a seemingly monumental task? She got it from the same place anyone does when they attempt to do work they’re untrained to do:
- Repetitive observation of others accomplishing the same task without injury makes it appear easy.
- They don’t know what they don’t know (lack of experience, license, training).
- A personality trait biased toward exuberance and overconfidence.
- A sense of personal achievement or potential reward (Frappuccino).
Her confident incompetence came from repeatedly observing her parents driving to and from Target, which emboldened her to try it on her own. Add in a personality trait that asks, "How hard can it be?" and answers with, "There’s a steering wheel for left and right. There’s a skinny pedal for GO, and a fat pedal for STOP. How hard can it be? Perhaps the only hard part to this whole job is finding the car keys! There’s a Frappuccino waiting at the end.”🤷🏼♂️🤣
**Here’s The Takeaway**
Are we really much different from that 3rd-grade little girl? No matter the age, there are some who feel confidently incompetent to hop on a forklift, weld a pipe joint, fix an electrical wire, crawl into a confined space, or take a shortcut, often done without injury. Remember, the absence of accidents does not mean the presence of safety—there was simply the presence of luck 🍀 .

I came across this picture of my A-10 squadron mates and me in our younger days of having lots of velocity and a tiny rudder! 😂
During those formidable years, one particular statement given to room full of us stands out...
“The majority of you are average. Some are better; some are worse, but most of you are average.” 😳🤯
I’ll never forget it! These were a few of the opening remarks given to us by a retiring Air Force Colonel. He was in his late 40s and had spent 20 years flying fighters. We were in our mid-20s and were just getting started.
I didn’t understand what he meant by saying the majority of us were “just average.” After all, in my mind we were some of the best in the world!
In the many years since, I have often reflected back to try and understand what the old geezer meant! Only through the prism of time and experience was I able to comprehend where he was coming from. He was exactly correct!
In a round about way, he was reminding us of the timeless old joke, “What do you call a doctor who graduates LAST in medical school?” DOCTOR!
It’s the same for any profession- doctor, lawyer, contractor, plumber, brick mason, fighter pilot, pipe fitter, lawn service, etc. All of us “graduate” into our professional trade. When we finally get there, some are at the top; some at the bottom; but most are average. But we ALL are a professionals in that trade.
So, that brings us back to what the old codger (who looked to us more like he had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel) was trying to say.
It now makes perfect sense. Individually, I was a licensed professional - “fighter pilot”. I was at the very tippy top of my trade as an aviator. But so was EVERYONE else in the room! So where did that put me?
If nothing else, it teaches a bit of humility. No one likes being average, or worse below average. But in your pool of professionals, statistically only a few are above average. So, among everyone in the room, where does that put you? It might sting a little to reflect inward and ask yourself, “Where am I today, and where do I want to be tomorrow?”
Most of us are competitive by nature. It’s how we got to where we are in our profession. Now that you’ve made it, are you just average or do you work at being above average?
